Abstract
Switchable and reversible optical elements have potential applications in self-adaptive optics. Shape-memory polymer devices with adaptive properties could be easily switched under environment or field stimuli. Here, the laser beam interference technique was used to realize the periodic grating structures of the shape-memory polymer, and memory and recovery of the grating structures were performed. A one-dimensional grating structure was fabricated from dual-beam interference lithography of a nanosecond laser and underwent pressure in a condition of 195°C. The vertical height of the grating was reduced, and the diffraction light was weakened. When the sample was cooled down to room temperature, the morphology of the grating could be kept. After raising the ambient temperature of the sample to 120°C, the morphology of the grating was recovered to the original state, which realized the shape-memory function.

Abstract
Aims: To identify the prevalence of major and minor electrocardiographic abnormalities and their association with the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease in a population in the province of Bengo, northern Angola.
Methods: A cross-sectional community-based study was conducted and a representative random sample stratified by sex and age was selected. In total, 2379 black individuals were included in the final analysis. A standard 12-lead ECG were recorded from all participants, analyzed and processed by the University of Glasgow software and coding by the Minnesota code.
Results: 22.3% of participants had minor electrocardiographic abnormalities and 4.58% major ECG abnormalities. The most common minor ECG abnormalities were abnormal T wave inversion, minor isolated ST abnormalities and premature beats. The most common major ECG abnormalities were Left ventricular hypertrophy with major ST-T abnormalities, Ventricular conduction defects and major Q-wave abnormalities. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, alcohol consumption and smoking, were significantly associated with major and minor electrocardiographic abnormalities.
Conclusions: In this study several participants had minor and major electrocardiographic abnormalities. Minor electrocardiographic abnormalities were more prevalent in men and major abnormalities in women. The electrocardiographic abnormalities had significant associations with the main cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
Globalization and climate change facilitate the spread and establishment of invasive species throughout the world via multiple pathways. These spread mechanisms can be effectively represented as diffusion processes on multi-scale, spatial networks. Such network-based modeling and simulation approaches are being increasingly applied in this domain. However, these works tend to be largely domain-specific, lacking any graph theoretic formalisms, and do not take advantage of more recent developments in network science. This work is aimed toward filling some of these gaps. We develop a generic multi-scale spatial network framework that is applicable to a wide range of models developed in the literature on biological invasions. A key question we address is the following: how do individual pathways and their combinations influence the rate and pattern of spread? The analytical complexity arises more from the multi-scale nature and complex functional components of the networks rather than from the sizes of the networks. We present theoretical bounds on the spectral radius and the diameter of multi-scale networks. These two structural graph parameters have established connections to diffusion processes. Specifically, we study how network properties, such as spectral radius and diameter are influenced by model parameters. Further, we analyze a multi-pathway diffusion model from the literature by conducting simulations on synthetic and real-world networks and then use regression tree analysis to identify the important network and diffusion model parameters that influence the dynamics.

Abstract
Here, we report a rare case of lung adenocarcinoma with intrapulmonary metastases that have "spread through air spaces" (STAS) by means of the alveoli and bronchioles. The peripheral intrapulmonary metastases were exhibiting pure ground-glass nodules along the bronchioles on computed tomography. The primary pathologic diagnosis was micropapillary adenocarcinoma with prominent tumor STAS. Histopathologic examination revealed that the cancer cells in the bronchioles around the primary tumor revealed micropapillary clusters on the mucosal surface or in the air spaces and reached peripheral intrapulmonary metastatic nodules. Notably, no vascular and stromal invasion was observed. The pathologic findings suggest that cancer cells are viable in the airspace of the bronchioles and alveoli and may support the significance of STAS as a pattern of airborne metastasis.

Abstract
Hundreds of different fast-growing Salix hybrids have been developed mainly for energy crops. In this paper, we studied water extracts from the bark of 15 willow hybrids and species as potential antimicrobial additives. Treatment of ground bark in water under mild conditions extracted 12-25% of the dry material. Preparative high-performance liquid chromatography is proven here as a fast and highly efficient tool in the small-scale recovery of raffinose from Salix bark crude extracts for structural elucidation. Less than half of the dissolved material was assigned by chromatographic (gas chromatography and liquid chromatography) and spectroscopic (mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) techniques for low-molecular-weight compounds, including mono- and oligosaccharides (sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose) and aromatic phytochemicals (triandrin, catechin, salicin, and picein). The composition of the extracts varied greatly depending on the hybrid or species and the harvesting season. This information generated new scientific knowledge on the variation in the content and composition of the extracts between Salix hybrids and harvesting season depending on the desired molecule. The extracts showed high antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.6-0.8 mg/mL; however, no inhibition was observed against Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Salmonella typhimurium. MIC of triandrin (i.e., 1.25 mg/mL) is reported for the first time. Although antibacterial triandrin and (+)-catechin were present in extracts, clear correlation between the antibacterial effect and the chemical composition was not established, which indicates that antibacterial activity of the extracts mainly originates from some not yet elucidated substances. Aquatic toxicity and mutagenicity assessments showed the safe usage of Salix water extracts as possible antibacterial additives.

Abstract
Background: Optimal control of acute postoperative pain and prevention of chronic persistent pain in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remain a challenge.
Methods: A randomized, non-inferiority clinical trial (385 patients) evaluated every hour immediate postoperative pain during 24 h, using a verbal rating 11-point scale for patient self-reporting of pain (VRS11). All patients received subarachnoid anesthesia and were randomly allocated in 4 groups: single shots femoral (FNB) or adductor canal blocks (ACB), both with dexamethasone (dex) and buprenorphine (bup). Patients received intravenous analgesia (metamizole magnesium, dexketoprofen) and rescue analgesia when needed: intravenous (paracetamol and morphine) and/or regional (femoral and sciatic nerve blocks). Demographics and adverse effects were also recorded.
Results: A 45.7% of patients had pain: bupACB 56.3%, bupFNB 50.0%, dexACB 40.6% and dexFNB 36.1% (p=0.022). Rescue analgesia was needed in 37.7% of patients (p=0.128). There were statistical differences in percentage of timepoints without pain (95.0±7.9%, p=0.014) and mean VRS11 (0.18±0.3, p=0.012) but no differences in distribution of intensity periods of pain. There were no significant differences in the need of rescue analgesia excepting the use of intravenous morphine (p=0.025).
Conclusions: buprenorphine is in the present trial inferior to dexamethasone by less than the established non-inferiority limit when used as perineural adjuvant in femoral nerve or adductor canal blocks in total knee arthroplasty analgesia. So, it could be considered an alternative in patients where dexamethasone is contraindicated, such as diabetics.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) and sexual dysfunction in fibromyalgia (FM) patients, as well as their relationship with disease severity.
Methods: Consecutive adult female patients with FM were enrolled. Patients filled in a comprehensive questionnaire package including demographic variables, disease severity assessment (revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire [FIQR]), neuropathic pain features (PainDetect Questionnaire [PDQ]), severity of OAB symptoms (Overactive Bladder Symptom Score [OABSS]), and determining sexual functioning (Female Sexual Function Index [FSFI]).
Results: The study included 481 patients, 116 (24.11%) had mild OAB, 82 patients (17.04%) had moderate OAB, and 34 patients had serious OAB (7.06%). In 14.17% of patients the bladder condition was causing them major issues in terms of discomfort. In 7.87% of patients the bladder condition was causing them significant problems. Sexual dysfunctions were found in 91 patients (18.91%). Using the FSFI as dependent variable, multivariate analysis revealed a positive relationship between sexual dysfunction and variables of disease burden (FIQR, p<0.0001; PDQ, p<0.0001, widespread pain index [WPI], p=0.0037). Using OABSS as the dependent variable, multivariate regression revealed a substantial contribution from FIQR (p<0.0001), PDQ (p=0.0037), and WPI (p=0.0030).
Conclusions: FM has the potential to affect both psychological and physiological processes in women with OAB and sexual dysfunction. These results emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to treat patients with overactive bladder syndrome and sexual dysfunction in FM.

Abstract
Background: Root exit zone (REZ) compression by a fusiform vertebral artery (VA) aneurysm is a rare cause of hemifacial spasm (HFS). We report a case of successful microvascular decompression (MVD) for the treatment of HFS caused by a fusiform VA aneurysm. We also review the relevant literature and demonstrate the effectiveness of surgical treatment.
Case description: A 64-year-old man presented with a 2-year and 4-month history of progressive involuntary facial twitching on the right side. Radiological examination revealed a fusiform right VA aneurysm. The REZ that was compressed by the aneurysm and the underlying anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) was surgically decompressed by transposing the VA and AICA and wrapping the aneurysm. Immediately post-operation, the patient's symptoms disappeared. For 7 years and 4 months postoperatively, there was no symptom recurrence or increase in aneurysm size.
Conclusion: MVD is an effective treatment for HFS caused by a fusiform VA aneurysm because symptoms are likely to improve immediately after treatment.

Abstract
As the ubiquity of technology-mediated communication grows, so does the number of questions about the costs and benefits of replacing in-person interactions with technology-mediated ones. In the present study, we used a daily diary design to examine how people's emotional experiences vary across in-person, video-, phone-, and text-mediated interactions in day-to-day life. We hypothesised that individuals would report less positive affect and more negative affect after less life-like interactions (where in-person is defined as the most life-like and text-mediated as the least life-like). In line with this hypothesis, the analysis of 527 unique interactions reported by 102 individuals (mean age = 19.3; 85.6% female) over the course of 7 days reveals that people feel lonelier, sadder, less affectionate, less supported, and less happy following less life-like interactions. Additional analyses show that the links between life-like communication and momentary experiences are independent of properties of individual interactions such as interaction length and participants' overall evaluations of interaction quality. These findings provide initial evidence that there may be inherent properties of common technology-mediated communication tools that may lead to momentary changes in affective experiences and make social connection more challenging.

Abstract
Introduction: Sleep deprivation is a relevant problem among patients hospitalized in ICUs. Further, noise is the most critical disruptive factor according to patients.
Objective: To implement scientific evidence-based best practices for noise control in an adult ICU.
Methods: This was an evidence-based implementation project of best practices in noise control, conducted in a high-complexity hospital's adult ICU. The intervention consisted of three steps: baseline audit and identification of barriers, implementation of best practices, and a follow-up audit.
Results: No compliance with best practices was detected in the baseline audit. After the implementation phase, the unit reached compliance levels of 78-88% for most of these criteria; only one criterion related to noise level did not match the expected compliance.
Conclusion: Adherence to best practices regarding noise control was satisfactory, achieving more than 70% compliance in the six audit criteria. Only the noise level did not reach the threshold recommended by the WHO - a difficulty reported in other studies.
Relevance to clinical practice: Best practices related to noise control are essential for managing sleep deprivation in ICUs and include changes in the behaviour of involved professionals.

Abstract
Chondrosarcoma is a group of primary bone cancers that arise from transformed cells of chondrocytic lineage. Tumor recurrence and metastasis are devastating for patients with chondrosarcoma since there are no effective treatment options. IDH mutations occur in over 50% of tumors from patients with conventional or dedifferentiated chondrosarcomas and represent an attractive target for therapy. However, their role in the pathogenesis of chondrosarcoma remains largely unknown. In this study, we sought to determine the association of IDH mutation and HIF-1α in chondrosarcoma. We used the chondrosarcoma JJ012 cell line and its derived CRISPR/Cas9 mutant IDH1 (IDH1mut) knockout (KO) cells. RNA-Seq data analysis revealed downregulation of several HIF-1α target genes upon loss of IDH1mut. This was associated with reduced HIF-1α levels in the IDH1mut KO cells and tumors. Loss of IDH1mut also attenuated the expression of angiogenic markers in tumor tissues and abrogated the angiogenic capacity of JJ012 cells. Moreover, we observed that exogenous expression of HIF-1α significantly promoted anchorage-independent colony-formation by IDH1mut KO cells. These results suggest IDH1 mutation confers angiogenic and tumorigenic properties of JJ012 cells by inducing HIF-1α. Thus, the HIF pathway represents a promising candidate for combinatorial regimens to target IDH1 mutated chondrosarcomas.

Abstract
Rationale: Macrophages play multi-dimensional roles in hepatic fibrosis. Studies have implicated Notch signaling mediated by the transcription factor RBP-J in macrophage activation and plasticity. Additionally, we have previously shown that myeloid-specific disruption of RBP-J can ameliorate hepatic fibrosis in mice. Accordingly, we next asked whether blocking Notch signaling in macrophages could serve as a therapeutic strategy to treat hepatic fibrosis. In this study, we used a combination of transcription factor decoy oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) and exosomes to test this possibility. Methods: Hairpin-type decoy oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) were designed for the transcription factor RBP-J. The effects of RBP-J decoy ODNs on Notch signaling were evaluated by western blot, quantitative RT-PCR, luciferase reporter assays, and electrophoretic mobility shift assays. ODNs were loaded into HEK293T-derived exosomes by electroporation. A hepatic fibrosis mouse model was established by the intraperitoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride or bile duct ligation. Mice with hepatic fibrosis were administered exosomes loaded with RBP-J decoy ODNs via tail vein injection. The in vivo distribution of exosomes was analyzed by fluorescence labeling and imaging. Liver histology was examined using hematoxylin and eosin, Sirius red, and Masson staining, as well as immunohistochemical staining for Col1α1 and αSMA. Results: We found that RBP-J decoy ODNs could be efficiently loaded into exosomes and inhibit the activation of Notch signaling. Furthermore, exosomes administered via the tail vein were found to be primarily taken up by hepatic macrophages in mice with liver fibrosis. Importantly, RBP-J decoy ODNs delivered by exosomes could efficiently inhibit Notch signaling in macrophages and ameliorate hepatic fibrosis in mice. Conclusions: Combined, our data showed that the infusion of exosomes loaded with RBP-J decoy ODNs represents a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of hepatic fibrosis.

Abstract
Background: Various studies in adults have shown a strong association between vitamin D and tuberculosis (TB), both in terms of vitamin D status and the benefits of vitamin D in managing TB. Studies on vitamin D and its relationship with childhood TB still lack in Indonesia as a country with the second-highest TB incidence globally. This study evaluated the effect of vitamin D supplementation on resolution of cough and fever in Indonesian children with pulmonary TB.
Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled trial of vitamin D supplementation in children with pulmonary TB and vitamin D insufficiency. Patients were randomly allocated with 1:1 ratio to receive either 1000 IU vitamin D or placebo daily after starting standard TB treatment. The primary outcome in this study was the resolution of fever and cough symptoms reviewed weekly after starting the treatment until the symptoms are resolved. The secondary outcome in this study was 25-hydroxyvitamin D serum level and nutritional status which was reviewed at the end of the trial. Intention to treat analyses were applied. Differences in clinical outcomes between two groups were calculated using Mann-Whitney U test or χ2 test, where appropriate.
Findings: A total of 84 patients met the inclusion criteria, aged 6 to 18 years old, newly diagnosed with pulmonary TB and vitamin D insufficiency. Eighty patients (95,2%) completed the six months follow-up. Faster resolution of fever, cough, improved malnutrition status, and higher vitamin D level were found in the intervention group compared to the placebo group (all P < 0.001).
Conclusions: Vitamin D is beneficial in improving fever and cough resolution, and improving nutritional status in children with pulmonary TB and vitamin D insufficiency. Determination of adequate supplementation levels of more than 1000 IU requires further research to achieve normal vitamin D levels during the duration of treatment for pulmonary TB in children.

Abstract
Objective The present study aims to evaluate the treatment of hip wave lesion using reverse microfracture, which is a simple and cheap surgical procedure. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 19 patients with acetabular wave lesion treated with reverse microfracture. The patients were assessed by magnetic nuclear resonance imaging (MRI) at the time of diagnosis and 6 months after the surgery and functionally evaluated using the Harris Hip Score (HHS) and the visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain in the preoperative period, and 3 and 6 months after the surgery. Results The statistical data showed a significant improvement in HHS and VAS 6 months after the surgery. Six months after the surgery, the MRI revealed that the area subjected to reverse microfracture presented cartilage with the same visual characteristics observed in areas with no chondral injury. Conclusion We conclude that the reverse microfracture proved to be an effective, reproducible method for the treatment of wave lesion.

Abstract
Objective: Osteoporosis (OP) is a worldwide ailment; we aim to establish new biomarkers in diagnosis by determining the levels of serum osteocalcin and osteopontin along with bone mineral density (BMD) and lumbar T-score, in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with or without OP.
Methods: This observational study included 160 postmenopausal women who were an attendee at outpatient clinics in Al-Hussein Hospital, Thi-Qar province; subdivided into 3 groups based on their T-score testing: Group I (n = 40) comprised postmenopausal women without T2DM as controls, Group II (n = 60) comprised postmenopausal women with T2DM but without OP, and Group III (n = 60) comprised postmenopausal women with T2DM with OP. The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure the BMD (total body, lumbar spine, and femoral) and T-score for lumbar spine and femoral. Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose (FBG), osteocalcin, and osteopontin levels were assessed in all three groups.
Results: Compared with controls, Group III demonstrated significantly lower BMD (total body, lumbar spine, and femoral), T-score for lumbar spine and femoral, serum osteocalcin, and osteopontin levels than Group II and Group I (P < 0.001). FBG and HbA1c levels were significantly higher in Group III than in Groups I and II (P < 0.001). A negative correlation was proved between HbA1c levels with BMD, osteocalcin levels, and osteopontin levels in the three groups.
Conclusions: Iraqi postmenopausal women with T2DM had a significantly lower bone mineral density, serum osteocalcin, and osteopontin levels. These results may serve as adjuvants in screening for OP, particularly among diabetic patients.

Abstract
The gastrointestinal tract is one of the locations that lung cancers cause metastasis. A 70-year-old male underwent right lower lobectomy while presenting fecal occult blood with a preoperative colonoscopy showing colon polyps as the cause. The pathological diagnosis was pleomorphic carcinoma of the lung, with stage pT3N0M0. Seven months after the lung surgery, the patient presented with sudden-onset abdominal pain and severe anemia. Computed tomography scanning revealed a large mass in the abdominal cavity, and subsequent intestinal endoscopy demonstrated jejunum tumors. Partial jejunum resection was successfully performed. The patient developed multiple peritoneal nodules suggesting metastatic tumors but well responded to an immune checkpoint inhibitor. It can be challenging to diagnose gastrointestinal metastasis in routine radiography; therefore, endoscopic examination, including the small intestine, might be an important option when a lung cancer patient with advanced clinical stage presents with abdominal symptoms, including fecal occult blood.

Abstract
Objective: To detect problems of mental health disorders early and actively by constructing a comprehensive evaluation system of mental health.
Methods: The evaluation system was constructed by the Minnesota personality questionnaire (MMPI), the personality questionnaire (EPQ), and the depression experience questionnaire (DEQ). Total 341 interns and residents in a general hospital were investigated with the questionnaire about psychological status, and the results were analyzed by SPSS22.0.
Results: The KMO was 0.879, and the factor load of the seven factors was 0.49 to 0.856. The cumulative variance contribution reached 72.18%, and the overall consistency coefficient was 0.871. The relationship, emotional disorder, paranoia, reflection, and positive response were 0.893, 0.614, 0.867, 0.771 and 0.621, respectively. In this study, the mental health composite scores of all study subjects met a normal distribution, so level 3 scores of clinical interns and residents were established according to the deviation method.
Conclusion: The constructed index system contains comprehensive indicators, good reliability efficiency, and a level 3 score, which helps individuals and hospitals to detect problems early, and provide guidance and advice for active intervention.

Abstract
Fluid retention is common in patients with heart failure (HF) and diuretics are a major source of management and stabilization. Diuretic resistance (DR) is defined as a failure to achieve therapeutically desired congestion relief despite using an appropriate diuretic dose. In this study, the underlying mechanisms of DR in HF patients are described and several currently available evidence-based strategies to mitigate this condition are provided. Specific aims were to investigate how DR occurs in patients with HF, how HF medications interfere with diuretic treatment, and what alternative methods are available for patients with DR while undergoing treatment for HF. Results provide several rationales for novel strategies used to help reach a state of euvolemia where there is a proper amount of blood in the circulatory system. These include reducing sodium intake, changing the timing of drug administration, and modifying diuretic dose.

Abstract
Background: Fifteen COVID-19 vaccines have been granted emergency approval before the completion of conventional phases of clinical trials. The present study aimed to analyze the neurological adverse events (AEs) post-COVID-19 vaccination and focuses on determining the association of AEs with the vaccine.
Methodology: The neurological AEs reported for COVID-19 vaccines in the WHO pharmacovigilance database (VigiBase) were extracted from the System Organ Classes - neurological disorders and investigations. Descriptive statistics are reported as percentage and frequency and the disproportionality analysis was also conducted.
Results: For the neurological system, 19,529 AEs were reported. Of these, 15,638 events were reported from BNT162b2 vaccine, 2,751 from AZD1222 vaccine, 1,075 from mRNA-1273 vaccine, eight from Vero vaccine, two from Covaxin, and for 55 AEs, vaccine name was not mentioned. The reason for more AEs reported with BNT162b2 can be maximum vaccination with BNT162b2 vaccine in the study period. According to the disproportionality analysis based on IC025 value, ageusia, anosmia, burning sensation, dizziness, facial paralysis, headache, hypoaesthesia, lethargy, migraine, neuralgia, paresis, parosmia, poor sleep quality, seizure, transient ischemic attack, and tremor are some of the AEs that can be associated with the administration of the vaccine.
Conclusion: The vaccines should be monitored for these AEs till the causality of these AEs with COVID-19 vaccines is established through further long-term follow-up studies. These neurological AEs reported in VigiBase should not be taken as conclusive and mass vaccination should be carried out to control the pandemic until a definite link of these adverse effects is established.

Abstract
Purpose: The current drain tubes for preventing surgically biliary anastomotic stricture are not naturally and easily removed. If a drain tube using biodegradable material is easily available and the degradation time of the tube is well controlled, surgical anastomotic stricture and fibrosis could be prevented. The aim of this animal study was to evaluate the preventive effect of novel biodegradable stents (BS) on biliary stricture and fibrosis after duct-to-duct (DD) biliary anastomosis.
Methods: Ten mini-pigs were allocated to the control group (n = 5) and or the stent group (n = 5). The common bile duct was exposed through surgical laparotomy and then resected transversely. In the stent group, a 4-mm or 6-mm polydioxanone/magnesium sheath-core BS was inserted according to the width of the bile duct, followed by DD biliary anastomosis. In the control group, DD biliary anastomosis was performed without BS insertion.
Results: In the stent group, stents were observed without deformity for up to 4 weeks in all animals. Eight weeks later, histopathologic examination revealed that the common bile duct of the anastomosis site was relatively narrower in circumference in the control group compared to the stent group. The degree of fibrosis in the control group was more marked than in the stent group (3.84 mm vs. 0.68 mm, respectively; P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Our study showed that novel BS maintained their original shape and radial force for an adequate time and then disappeared without adverse events. The BS could prevent postoperative complications and strictures after DD biliary anastomosis.

Abstract
Gossypiboma or textiloma denotes the formation of a mass lesion due to the development of foreign body reactions around the retained surgical item in the body. Most of the cases are asymptomatic in the initial postoperative period. Due to the dense adhesions, most of the cases of intra-abdominal gossypiboma are treated by an open approach. Here we present a case of a 38-year-old lady with left iliac fossa pain one month after caesarean section. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen revealed gossypiboma. The patient was successfully treated with laparoscopic removal of the gossypiboma.

Abstract
Introduction The emergence and rapid spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have revealed the limitations in current healthcare systems to handle patient records securely and transparently, and novel protocols are required to address these shortcomings. An attractive option is the use of Ethereum smart contracts to secure the storage of medical records and concomitant data logs. Ethereum is an open-source platform that can be used to construct smart contracts, which are collections of code that allow transactions under certain parameters and are self-executable. Methods The present study developed a proof-of-concept smart contract that stores COVID-19 patient data such as the patient identifier (ID), variant, chest CT grade, and significant comorbidities. A sample, fictitious patient data for the purpose of testing was configured to a private network. A smart contract was created in the Ethereum state and tested by measuring the time to insert and query patient data. Results Testing with a private, Proof of Authority (PoA) network required only 191 milliseconds and 890 MB of memory per insertion to insert 50 records while inserting 350 records required 674 milliseconds and similar memory per insertion, as memory per insertion was nearly constant with the increasing number of records inserted. Retrieving required 912 MB for a query involving all three fields and no wildcards in a 350-record database. Only 883 MB was needed to procure a similar observation from a 50-record database. Conclusion This study exemplifies the use of smart contracts for efficient retrieval/insertion of COVID-19 patient data and provides a case use of secure and efficient data logging for sensitive COVID-19 data.
