Abstract
We report an experimental study of diffusion in a quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) colloid suspension which behaves like a Tonks gas. The mean squared displacement as a function of time is described well with an ansatz encompassing a time regime that is both shorter and longer than the mean time between collisions. The ansatz asserts that the inverse mean squared displacement is the sum of the inverse mean squared displacement for short time normal diffusion (random walk) and the inverse mean squared displacement for asymptotic single-file diffusion (SFD). The dependence of the 1D mobility in the SFD on the concentration of the colloids agrees quantitatively with that derived for a hard rod model, which confirms for the first time the validity of the hard rod SFD theory. We also show that a recent SFD theory by Kollmann leads to the hard rod SFD theory for a Tonks gas.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
This study was undertaken to determine the role of abnormal distal rectoanal excitatory reflex (RAER) as a marker of pudendal neuropathy and to compare results with pudendal nerve terminal motor latency (PNTML) and single fiber density (SFD) estimation.
METHODS
Fifteen female patients (mean age, 47.1 (range, 20-70) years) referred to the pelvic floor laboratory with pelvic floor disorders (fecal incontinence, 13 patients; constipation, 2 patients) were evaluated prospectively with neurophysiologic tests and balloon reflex manometry for evidence of pudendal neuropathy.
RESULTS
Pudendal nerve terminal motor latency provided evidence of pudendal neuropathy in ten patients (67 percent) and was normal in five patients (33 percent). Increased SFD confirmed denervation of the external anal sphincter in 12 patients (80 percent), being normal in 3 patients (20 percent). Distal RAER was abnormal in 13 patients (87 percent) and was normal in 2 patients (13 percent). In ten patients (67 percent), the three diagnostic modalities were in complete agreement, correctly identifying neuropathy in nine patients (60 percent) and excluding nerve damage in one patient (7 percent). Distal RAER was normal despite prolonged PNTML and increased SFD in one patient (7 percent). In two patients (13 percent), distal RAER was abnormal or absent despite normal PNTML and SFD. Pudendal nerve terminal motor latency was normal in the presence of abnormal distal RAER and increased SFD on electromyography in two patients (13 percent).
CONCLUSIONS
Abnormal distal RAER compares favorably with current neurophysiologic tests used to diagnose pudendal neuropathy.

Abstract
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus is a major threat to public health as well as to the global poultry industry. Most fatal human infections are caused by contact with infected poultry. Therefore, preventing the virus from entering the poultry population is a priority. This is, however, problematic in emergency situations, e.g. during outbreaks in poultry, as there are currently no mass application methods to effectively vaccinate large numbers of birds within a short period of time. To evaluate the suitability of needle-free pulmonary immunization for mass vaccination of poultry against HPAI H5N1, we performed a proof-of-concept study in which we investigated whether non-adjuvanted spray-freeze-dried (SFD) whole inactivated virus (WIV) can be used as a dry powder aerosol vaccine to immunize chickens. Our results show that chickens that received SFD-WIV vaccine as aerosolized powder directly at the syrinx (the site of the tracheal bifurcation), mounted a protective antibody response after two vaccinations and survived a lethal challenge with HPAI H5N1. Furthermore, both the number of animals that shed challenge virus, as well as the level of virus shedding, were significantly reduced. Based on antibody levels and reduction of virus shedding, pulmonary vaccination with non-adjuvanted vaccine was at least as efficient as intratracheal vaccination using live virus. Animals that received aerosolized SFD-WIV vaccine by temporary passive inhalation showed partial protection (22% survival) and a delay in time-to-death, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of the method, but indicating that the efficiency of vaccination by passive inhalation needs further improvement. Altogether our results provide a proof-of-concept that pulmonary vaccination using an SFD-WIV powder vaccine is able to protect chickens from lethal HPAI challenge. If the efficacy of pulmonary vaccination by passive inhalation can be improved, this method might be suitable for mass application.

Abstract
Drabkins method has been modified enabling detection of anaemia in a large population. 132 samples of EDTA blood were subjected to hemoglobin estimation by (1) Direct Drabkin (DD) (2), Filter Drabkin (FD) and (3) Special Filter Drabkin (SFD). Hemoglobin estimations by DD and FD compared well on statistical analysis. SFD with a punch diameter of 10.6 to 10.7 mm compared well with DD and is ideal for screening anaemia in field studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
To evaluate a new commercial PTW-60019 microDiamond (PTW, Freiburg, Germany) synthetic single-crystal diamond detector for relative dosimetry measurements on a clinical CyberKnife™ VSI (Accuray Inc., Sunnyvale, CA) system.
METHODS
Relative output factors (ROFs) were measured for collimator diameters from 5 to 60 mm, and compared with diode [PTW-60017, PTW-60018 and IBA Dosimetry (Schwarzenbruck, Germany) SFD] and ionization chamber (PTW-31014 PinPoint and PTW-31010 Semiflex) measurements. Beam profiles were measured at a range of depths, and collimator sizes, with the detector stem oriented both parallel and perpendicular to the central axis (CAX). Percentage depth-dose (PDD) curves were obtained for the 60-mm collimator and compared with natural Diamond Detector (PTW-60003) and ionization chamber curves to evaluate energy dependence.
RESULTS
Penumbral broadening was noted on profile measurements made with the microDiamond oriented with the stem parallel to the CAX, in comparison with diodes. Oriented perpendicular to the CAX, the profile penumbra was sharper, but stem effects could not be ruled out. The PDD measurements were within 0.5% of ionization chamber measurements, indicating insignificant dose-rate dependence. The ROF for the microDiamond fell between diode and ionization chamber results. Published Monte Carlo-derived CyberKnife-specific factors were applied to the PTW-60017, PTW-60018 and PTW-31014 ROFs, and the microDiamond factors agreed within 2.0% of the mean of these.
CONCLUSIONS
Over a range of small field relative dosimetry measurements, the microDiamond detector shows excellent spatial resolution, dose-rate independence and water equivalence.
CONCLUSIONS
The microDiamond is a suitable tool for commissioning stereotactic systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND
To evaluate the effects and side-effects of serial sub-conjunctival injections of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in early postoperative period for recurrent anophthalmic contracted socket.
METHODS
Retrospective comparative case series at tertiary eye care centre including fifteen adult patients with features of postoperative recurrent socket contraction after buccal mucosal graft. Group A comprised eight patients treated with 10 mg weekly sub-conjunctival injection of 5-FU in the fornices. Group B comprised seven patients taken as control. Main outcome measures were: superior fornix depth (SFD), inferior fornix depth (IFD), and socket volume (SV) at 6 months follow up. Patients were re-evaluated clinically for recurrence at last follow-up.
RESULTS
The mean ± SD values in group A versus group B were as follows: 10 ± 1.6 mm vs 5.1 ± 0.9 mm (p < 0.005) for SFD, 6.7 ± 1.5 mm vs 3.5 ± 0.5 mm (p = 0.02) for IFD; and 2 ± 0.55 ml versus 0.27 ± 0.06 ml (p = 0.005) for SV at 6 months. There was significant improvement in depth of fornices and volume of socket in seven patients in group A. One patient in group A did not benefit from 5-FU treatment. The beneficial effects of 5-FU were observed when first injection was given within 4 weeks after socket reconstruction. There was no recurrence (in six cases) and no side-effects seen in group A at final follow-up of 18.2 (12-24) months.
CONCLUSIONS
Weekly injections of 5-FU are effective for stopping the progression of recurrent contracted socket following primary reconstructive surgery. It provides early rehabilitation, and avoids repetitive surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
The commissioning of treatment planning systems and beam modeling requires measured input parameters. The measurement of relative output in-air, Sc is particularly difficult for small fields. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of miniphantom design and detector selection on measured Sc values for small fields and to validate the measurements against Monte Carlo simulations.
METHODS
Measurements were performed using brass caps (with sidewalls) or tops (no sidewalls) of varying heights and widths. The performance of two unshielded diodes (60012 and SFD), EBT2 radiochromic film, and a fiber optic dosimeter (FOD) were compared for fields defined by MLCs (5-100 mm) and SRS cones (4-30 mm) on a Varian Novalis linear accelerator. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to theoretically predict Sc as measured by the FOD.
RESULTS
For all detectors, Sc agreed to within 1% for fields larger than 10 mm and to within 2.3% for smaller fields. Monte Carlo simulation matched the FOD measurements for all size of cone defined fields to within 0.5%.
CONCLUSIONS
Miniphantom design is the most important variable for reproducible and accurate measurements of the in-air output ratio, S(c), in small photon fields (less than 30 mm). Sidewalls are not required for fields ≤ 30 mm and tops are therefore preferred over the larger caps. Unlike output measurements in water, S(cp), the selection of detector type for Sc is not critical, provided the active dosimeter volume is small relative to the field size.

Abstract
There are only few data on the effectiveness of recommended drug therapies in asthma under "real-life" conditions without targeted intervention. The study aimed at analyzing the efficacy of the fixed combination of the inhaled corticosteroid fluticasone propionate and the long-acting beta2-agonist salmeterol (FS) for maintenance treatment of moderate persistent asthma (GINA stage 3) within an observational design, mimicking "real-life" as closely as possible. The fixed combination was compared with other forms of treatment that were in accordance with treatment guidelines (pooled comparison (PC) group). Patients kept a diary during a 12-month observation period and routine visits were taken for surveillance. Among 596 patients, 371 patients belonged to the FS and 225 patients to the PC group. The proportion of symptom-free days (SFD) was higher in the FS than PC group (median, 76 vs 67%; p=0.002). Furthermore, the change in asthma control score (p<0.0001) and the percent increase in FEV1 (p<0.05) after 12 months were greater. There was a lower percentage of patients with hospital stays (p<0.05). The proportions of episode-free or sick-leave days and the number of routine or emergency visits did not significantly differ between groups. Direct costs of treatment per SFD were lower in the FS than PC group (median, 3.78 vs 4.41 Euro; p<0.05). We conclude that in a setup close to clinical practice treatment of patients with moderate persistent asthma with the fixed combination of fluticasone propionate and salmeterol has beneficial effects compared to other forms of therapy and can improve cost-efficiency.

Abstract
In the past decade, snake fungal disease (SFD) has been identified as an emerging threat to snake populations throughout the eastern USA. Snake fungal disease is caused by the fungus Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola. Little is known regarding the environmental or physiological variables that affect host vulnerability and O. ophiodiicola virulence in wild snake populations. Understanding the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that correlate with infection severity is a key first step in understanding host-pathogen dynamics. Host vulnerability may vary seasonally as a result of thermal conditions or energetic trade-offs, and pathogen growth rates or dispersal may be tied to seasonal trends in climate. To determine whether season, environmental temperature or energetic trade-offs associated with life-history stage influence an individual's susceptibility to infection, we monitored the severity of clinical signs of SFD, surface air temperature, reproductive status, body condition and serum complement activity (plasma bactericidal ability) in free-ranging pigmy rattlesnakes, Sistrurus miliarius, over the course of 18 months. Seasonal increases in the severity of clinical signs of SFD were correlated negatively with monthly air surface temperature and the mean body condition of the population. Bactericidal ability varied seasonally, but pigmy rattlesnakes suffering from active SFD infections did not exhibit deficits in innate immune function. Infected snakes were in significantly lower body condition when compared with the general population, but seasonal patterns in the mean body condition of the population were not driven by seasonal patterns of infection severity. Our results highlight the potential importance of the thermal environment and energetic status in determining infection severity and outcomes and the need for managers and researchers to consider seasonality of symptom presentation when the goal is to identify the prevalence or incidence of SFD in populations.

Abstract
The Somatic Signal Detection Task (SSDT) is a recent paradigm serving to examine perceptual processes likely relevant for somatoform disorders. We tested whether touch illusions are more easily induced in individuals suffering from somatoform disorders (SFD) and whether their perceptual threshold for tactile stimuli is lower compared to healthy controls. Thirty-three participants with SFD and 32 healthy controls reported whether they recognized near-threshold tactile stimuli at their fingertip, which were presented in half of the test trials. With a probability of 0.5, an auxiliary visual stimulus was additionally presented. Tactile detection thresholds, tactile sensitivity, response bias, and the rate of false-positive perceptions of the tactile stimulus were assessed. In both groups, the light stimulus led to an amelioration of tactile sensitivity as well as to a more liberal response style. The SFD group was characterized by a more liberal response bias in the first half of the light-absent condition compared to the healthy controls. Within the SFD group, the report of somatoform (especially pseudoneurological) symptoms correlated positively with illusory tactile perceptions in the SSDT. Tactile thresholds in the SSDT were measured reliably (rtt = .86) and were significantly lower in the SFD group. The notion that general perceptual dispositions influence the formation of symptom perception may thus complement cognitive models of SFD.

Abstract
The following results were obtained by analyzing serum IgG, IgM and IgA of blood from the umbilical cord chiefly of small-for-date infants (term SFD infants): (1) The serum IgG level was higher in the infant's blood than in the mother's blood in the cases of appropriate-for-date infants (term AFD infants). Its fetus/ mother ratio was 1.25 +/- 0.22. (2) The fetus/mother ratios of IgG in term SFD infants and premature infants were lower than in term AFD infants. (3) The placental transmission of IgG increased as the gestation weeks went by, and its fetus/mother ratio reached 1.0 by the 38th week of pregnancy. (4) The serum IgM level was lower in term SFD infants than in term AFD infants. (5) Term SFD infants showed no difference of serum IgA level from that of term AFD infants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
Small field x-ray beam dosimetry is difficult due to lack of lateral electronic equilibrium, source occlusion, high dose gradients, and detector volume averaging. Currently, there is no single definitive detector recommended for small field dosimetry. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of a new commercial synthetic diamond detector, namely, the PTW 60019 microDiamond, for the dosimetry of small x-ray fields as used in stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).
METHODS
Small field sizes were defined by BrainLAB circular cones (4-30 mm diameter) on a Novalis Trilogy linear accelerator and using the 6 MV SRS x-ray beam mode for all measurements. Percentage depth doses (PDDs) were measured and compared to an IBA SFD and a PTW 60012 E diode. Cross profiles were measured and compared to an IBA SFD diode. Field factors, ΩQclin,Qmsr (fclin,fmsr) , were calculated by Monte Carlo methods using BEAMnrc and correction factors, kQclin,Qmsr (fclin,fmsr) , were derived for the PTW 60019 microDiamond detector.
RESULTS
For the small fields of 4-30 mm diameter, there were dose differences in the PDDs of up to 1.5% when compared to an IBA SFD and PTW 60012 E diode detector. For the cross profile measurements the penumbra values varied, depending upon the orientation of the detector. The field factors, ΩQclin,Qmsr (fclin,fmsr) , were calculated for these field diameters at a depth of 1.4 cm in water and they were within 2.7% of published values for a similar linear accelerator. The corrections factors, kQclin,Qmsr (fclin,fmsr) , were derived for the PTW 60019 microDiamond detector.
CONCLUSIONS
The authors conclude that the new PTW 60019 microDiamond detector is generally suitable for relative dosimetry in small 6 MV SRS beams for a Novalis Trilogy linear equipped with circular cones.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Mutations in tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-3 (TIMP3) gene result in the rare autosomal dominant disease Sorsby's fundus dystrophy (SFD), which shows striking similarities to age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). METHODS: Current research is reviewed and suggests that these mutations result in the accumulation of TIMP3 in Bruch's membrane resulting in decreased turnover of the extracellular matrix and consequent thickening of Bruch's membrane. DNA analysis of ARMD patients has failed to show any significant mutations in the coding-regions of TIMP3. However, this should not be taken to imply that TIMP3 is not affected in the disease, as another possibility is that levels of TIMP3 might be elevated by other mechanisms. CONCLUSION: The finding that TIMP3 levels are elevated in simplex retinitis pigmentosa in the absence of coding mutations begs for a revaluation of its role in other retinal conditions such as ARMD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
Psychobehavioral characteristics of patients with somatoform disorders (SFDs), are increasingly discussed as possible positive criteria for this diagnostic group. However, little is known about psychobehavioral differences, or similarities, between the different SFD presentations, i.e., polysymptomatic [multisomatoform/somatization disorders (MSD)] versus mono- or oligosymptomatic courses [pain disorder (PD), undifferentiated somatoform disorder (USD)].
METHODS
This is a cross-sectional study including 268 consecutive allergology inpatients. After an Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, patients completed several self-rating questionnaires. Results were compared within the different SFD presentations as well as between patients with versus without SFDs.
RESULTS
We identified 72 patients with an SFD. There were fewer and smaller psychobehavioral differences within patients with the different SFD presentations (MSD, USDs, PDs) than between patients with undifferentiated versus no SFD. Patients with one of the three different SFD subdiagnoses scored similarly on many measures referring to psychosocial distress (e.g., psychological distress, mental health-related quality of life, dissatisfaction with care). The number of reported symptoms, somatic symptom severity, a self-concept of bodily weakness, the degree of disease conviction, and physical health-related quality of life discriminated the different SFD presentations not only from patients without SFDs but also from each other.
CONCLUSIONS
Patients diagnosed with one of the different SFD subtypes share many psychobehavioral characteristics, mostly regarding the reporting of psychosocial distress. Perceived somatic symptom severity and physical impairment as indicators of bodily distress could either further define categorical subdivisions of SFD or dimensionally graduate one general SFD category defined by bothering bodily symptoms and disproportionate psychosocial distress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND
This study aims at simplifying the practical patient management and offers some general indications for pharmacotherapeutic choice by the implementation of (Global Initiative for Chronic Lung Disease) guidelines. This study was designed to evaluate the clinical and economic consequences of salmeterol/fluticasone (SF), formoterol/budesonide (FB), and formoterol/fluticasone (FF) in severe and very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients.
OBJECTIVE
The aim was to find out the most cost-effective drug combination between the three combinations (SF/FB/FF) in COPD patients.
METHODS
A prospective observational comparative study (cost-effectiveness analysis), in which 90 severe (30 ≤ forced expiratory volume in 1 s [FEV1] <50% predicted) and very severe (FEV1 < 30% predicted) COPD patients (outpatients/inpatients) who are prescribed with any one of the following combinations (SF/FB/FF) were selected. In our study, we have divided 90 COPD patients into three groups (Group I, Group II, and Group III) each group consisting of 30 patients. Group I was prescribed with medication SF, Group II with medication FB, and Group III with medication FF. We used five different parameters such as spirometry test (mean FEV1 initial and final visit), number of symptom-free days (SFDs), number of moderate and severe exacerbations, Number of days of hospitalization and direct, indirect, and total cost to assess the cost-effectiveness of SF/FB/FF. Comparison of cost and effects was done during the period of 6 months of using SF/FB/FF.
RESULTS
The average FEV1 for Group I, Group II, and Group III subjects at initial visit was 33.47%, 33.73%, and 33.20% and was increased to 36.60%, 35.8%, and 33.4%, respectively. A 3% increment in FEV1 was reported for Group I subjects (SF) and was highly significant statistically (t = -8.833, P = 0.000) at 95% CI. For Group II subjects (FB), a 2% increment in FEV1 was reported and was highly significant statistically (t = -9.001, P = 0.000) at 95% CI. For Group III (FF) subjects 0.2% increment in FEV1. The overall mean total cost for Group I, Group II, and Group III subjects during the 6 months period was found to be Rs. 29,725/-, Rs. 32,602/- and Rs. 37,155/-. Incremental cost-effectiveness of FB versus SF was Rs. 37,781/- per avoided exacerbation and Rs. 661/-per SFD.
CONCLUSIONS
This study highlights the favorable therapeutic performance of combined inhaled bronchodilators and corticosteroids (SF/FB/FF), thus suggesting that healthcare costs would be also affected positively. Results from our study showed that SF and FB were the most effective strategies in the treatment of COPD, with a slight clinical superiority of SF. The FF strategy was not much effective (i.e. associated with fewer outcomes and higher costs).

Abstract
METHODS
The effect of soy food supplementation or dietary fat reduction on gene expression is not well studied.
RESULTS
We evaluated the potential of gene expression profiling in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) collected at baseline and at the completion of an 8-wk controlled dietary intervention. Healthy postmenopausal women were randomized to a very-low-fat diet (VLFD; 11% of energy as fat) (n=21), a Step 1 diet (25% energy as fat) supplemented with soy food (SFD; 50 mg isoflavones per day) (n=20), or a control Step 1 diet (CD; 27% energy as fat) with no SFD (n=18). All diets were prepared at the General Clinical Research Center of the University of Southern California. We did not observe any gene that showed variable response across the three dietary interventions. However, there were notable changes in gene expression associated with the intervention in the VLFD and SFD groups. Our findings suggest that the expression of nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) and genes related to Fc γ R-mediated phagocytosis and cytokine interactions may be significantly altered in association with dietary fat reduction and soy supplementation. Gene expression changes in NAMPT were somewhat dampened with adjustment for weight but changes related to Fc γ R-mediated phagocytosis and cytokine interactions remained largely unchanged.
CONCLUSIONS
PBMCs can reveal novel gene expression changes in association with controlled dietary intervention.

Abstract
Particles of poorly water-soluble drugs were prepared to develop a dry powder inhaler (DPI). Spray freeze-drying (SFD) technique using a four-fluid nozzle (4N), which has been developed by authors, was applied in this research. Ciclosporin and mannitol were used as a poorly water-soluble model drug and a dissolution-enhanced carrier, respectively. The organic solution of ciclosporin and aqueous solution of mannitol were separately and simultaneously atomized through the 4N, and the two solutions were collided with each other at the tip of the nozzle edge. The spray mists were immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen to form a suspension. Then, the iced droplets were freeze-dried to prepare the composite particles of the drug and carrier. tert-Butyl alcohol (t-BuOH) was used as the organic spray solvent due to its relatively high freezing point. The resultant composite particles with varying drug content were characterized depending on their morphological and physicochemical properties. The particles contained amorphous ciclosporin and δ-crystalline mannitol. The characteristic porous structure of SFD particles potentially contributed to their good aerodynamic performance. A series of particles with a similar size distribution and different drug content revealed that the incorporation of mannitol successfully improved the cohesive behavior of ciclosporin, leading to enhanced aerosol dispersion. The dissolution test method using low-volume medium was newly established to simulate the release process from particles deposited on the surface of the bronchus and pulmonary mucosa. The composite with hydrophilic mannitol dramatically improved the in vitro dissolution behavior of ciclosporin in combination with the porous structure of SFD particles.

Abstract
Snake fungal disease (SFD), caused by Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola, threatens free-ranging snake populations across the US. We assayed 112 swabs from 102 individual eastern massasaugas ( Sistrurus catenatus ) at three locations in Michigan in 2014 for Ophidiomyces using quantitative PCR (qPCR). We observed a 12.7% qPCR prevalence of skin lesions. Individuals at each site had lesions, and occurrence of skin lesions was not significantly different between sites. We detected Ophidiomyces DNA at each of the three sites in five individuals (4.9%). We found no difference in detection probabilities between sites; however, snakes with dermatitis had higher Ophidiomyces DNA detection probabilities (P=0.15±0.08 SE) than snakes without dermatitis (P=0.02±0.01 SE, P=0.026). The emergence of SFD mortalities has potentially serious consequences for the viability of the eastern massasauga in Michigan. Future work should track temporal patterns in vital rates and health parameters, link health data to body condition indices for individual snakes, and conduct a "hotspot" analysis to examine health on a landscape scale.

Abstract
Recent evidence suggests p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal transduction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of progressive renal disease. Using dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we evaluated chronic treatment with a p38 MAPK inhibitor, trans-1-(4-hydroxycyclohexyl)-4-(4-fluorophenyl-methoxypyridimidin-4-yl)imidazole (SB-239063), on renal function in a hypertension model of progressing renal dysfunction. Spontaneously hypertensive-stroke prone rats were placed on a high salt/fat diet (SFD) or maintained on normal chow diet (ND). SFD animals with albuminuria at 4 to 8 weeks >> or =10 mg/day inclusion criteria), were randomized into p38 MAPK inhibitor treatment (SB-239063, 1200 ppm in diet) or vehicle groups. The progression of blood pressure and albuminuria during the treatment period (approximately 6 weeks) was decreased by 12 and 60%, respectively, in the SFD + SB-239063 versus SFD control group. Renal perfusion and filtration were assessed by in vivo MRI at the end of the study. Relative cortical perfusion was increased in the SFD + SB-239063 group compared with the SFD control group as reflected by a 29% decrease in time to peak of contrast agent in the cortex. Additionally, the regional renal glomerular filtration rate index (Kcl) was increased by 39% in the SFD + SB-239063 versus SFD control group and was normalized to the ND control group. Greater functional heterogeneity was observed in the SFD control versus SFD + SB-239063 or ND control group. All alterations of renal function were supported by histopathological findings. In conclusion, chronic treatment with a p38 MAPK inhibitor, SB-239063, attenuates functional and structural renal degeneration in a hypertensive model of established renal dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
The aim of the present study was to investigate if somatoform disorders (SFD) are associated with changes in the normal serum levels of important interleukins, and further, to establish if these changes are related to the presence and severity of alexithymia in patients with SFD.
METHODS
Twenty-four unmedicated patients who met the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) diagnostic criteria for SFD completed the psychological questionnaire to assess alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale), symptom reporting (SCL-90-R) and diagnostic criteria for SFD (Screening for Somatoform Symptoms scale). Serum concentrations of soluble interleukin 2 receptor alpha (sIL-2 Ralpha), IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-12 were determined in patients with SFD and in 9 healthy subjects.
RESULTS
In patients with SFD, serum levels of IL-6 (p < 0.001), IL-10 (p = 0.047) and immunoglobulin E (p = 0.045) were significantly increased in comparison with healthy controls. Additionally, a negative correlation was observed between the level of alexithymia ('total' Toronto Alexithymia Scale score) and the serum levels of sIL-2 Ralpha (r = -0.538) in SFD.
CONCLUSIONS
Taken together, these results suggest that SFD, with clinically significant alexithymia, are associated with a reduction in Th1-mediated immune function and an increase in the activation of the Th2 immune function, indicated by the augmented serum levels of IL-6 and IL-10 and elevated immunoglobulin E.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
To determine whether degraded representations (characterized by small differences between word sense frequencies), or defective competitive processes (high levels of word sense lateral inhibition), individually or jointly, can give rise to parkinsonian semantic deficits.
METHODS
Computer model of semantic processing.
METHODS
Correct sense selection, defined by the activation of the word sense unit that first reaches the 0.5 activation threshold. If Parkinson disease (PD)-like errors are observed only at high levels of lateral inhibition, independently of low or high sense frequency deltas (SFDs), this would indicate that a defective competitive process alone could account for the errors. Alternatively, if PD-like errors were observed at any level of lateral inhibition, exclusively with low SFD words, this would indicate that degraded representations alone could account for the errors.
RESULTS
Neither degraded representations nor defective competitive processes alone can account for parkinsonian semantic errors. An interaction between the 2, however, correctly reproduces both increased errors and longer latency responses.
CONCLUSIONS
Competing explanations for semantic deficits in patients with Parkinson's disease need to be integrated in order to develop effective interventions (e.g., estimating the amount of context required to improve semantic processing performance).

Abstract
Laser-diode (LD) pumped self-frequency doubling (SFD) Nd:GdCa4O(BO3)3 (Nd:GdCOB) miniature laser was demonstrated. The output power as high as 1.35 W was achieved which is over than five times than previous values for Nd:LnCa4O(BO3)3 (Ln=Y or Gd) SFD lasers and becomes the highest continuous-wave output power in this field to our knowledge. The maximum optical conversion efficiency is 17%. By comparison, we found that the cutting direction along its optimal phase-matching direction out of the principal planes is the determining factor resulting in this watt-level efficient output power. Different with previous studies, the emission wavelength is centered at about 545 nm. We believed that this efficient laser will become the most competitive one in the existing commercial green lasers, especially in the laser display, medical treatment and spectroscopic analysis etc.

Abstract
1. Placental Na+, K+ -ATPase activities were measured in connection with the active transport of amino acid, intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR) or small for date infants (SFD) in salt-loaded pregnant SHRSP. 2. All parameters such as fetal weight, placental weight and Na+, K+ -ATPase activity in the placental tissue were significantly depressed in SHRSP, especially in the salt-loaded SHRSP compared with WKY. 3. Besides a decrease of blood flow, a decline of Na+, K+ -ATPase activity associated with an active transport of amino acid in the placenta would cause IUGR and SFD in the salt-loaded pregnant SHRSP. 4. Pregnant SHRSP given water containing salt would be a good model for pregnancy induced hypertension in humans.

Abstract
Resistive indices (RI) in the anterior cerebral artery (ACA), basilar artery (BA), middle cerebral artery (MCA) and descending aorta (DA) were obtained in 15 small-for-dates (SFD) infants who were, growth retarded because of maternal pregnancy-induced hypertension and in 20 appropriate-for-dates (AFD) infants matched for gestational age between 24 h and 48 h after birth. The RIs in the MCA, ACA and BA were significantly lower, while the RI in the DA was significantly higher, in the SFD infants than in the AFD infants. These changes in RIs in the SFD infants might be similar to the "brain sparing" effect as reported in growth-retarded fetuses.
