Abstract
Since its inception as a simple, low cost alternative to more complicated lithographic techniques such as electron-beam and dip-pen lithography, capillary force lithography (CFL) has developed into a versatile tool to form sub-100 nm patterns. Utilizing the concept of a polymer melt, structures and devices generated by the technique have been used in applications varying from surfaces regulating cell growth to gas sensing. In this review, we discuss various CFL methodologies which have evolved, their application in both biological and non-biological research, and finally a brief outlook in areas of research where CFL is destined to make an enormous impact in the near future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
Lateral ankle sprains are very common, representing up to 30% of sports-related injuries. The anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and less commonly the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) are injured. Surgical treatment is reserved for injuries that fail nonoperative treatment with recurrent instability. Anatomic repair using the modified Broström technique has been shown to have good clinical outcomes in the adult population. The purpose of this study was to report on the outcomes of the modified Broström technique in the pediatric and adolescent population (under 18 y old) for chronic lateral ankle instability.
METHODS
Thirty-one patients over an 8-year period were included in the current study after excluding for congenital malformation or underlying connective tissue disease. All patients were treated with a modified Broström technique in which the ATFL was repaired anatomically. Twenty-four patients (77%) underwent concomitant arthroscopy for intra-articular pathology. Demographic, surgical, and clinical data were collected and outcome scores were obtained, including the Marx activity scale, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) activity score, and modified American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score.
RESULTS
Mean time from initial injury to surgery averaged 27 months with an overall mean clinical postoperative follow-up of 36 months. Of the 24 patients who underwent concomitant arthroscopy, all had thickening of Bassett ligament and 3 (12.5%) had cartilage lesions. Postoperatively, the mean Marx activity score was 9.9±4.7, mean UCLA score was 9.3±1.3, and mean modified AOFAS score was 83.8±11.7. 71% (22 of 31) of patients achieved good-to-excellent results (as defined by a modified AOFAS score of 80 or greater). Two patients had superficial wound infections; no other complications were experienced in this cohort.
CONCLUSIONS
Lateral ankle sprains are common injuries that can frequently be treated nonoperatively; chronic instability may result despite appropriate therapy. Surgical treatment with anatomic repair of the ATFL and CFL using the modified Broström technique in pediatric and adolescent patients results in improved stability, low complication rate, and good clinical outcome scores.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
To compare the surgical outcomes of the two different ankle stabilization techniques.
METHODS
This randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the outcomes of the modified Broström procedure with [calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) group] or without CFL repair [anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) only group]. Of the 50 patients randomly assigned to two groups, 43 were followed up prospectively for ≥ 2 years (CFL group: 22 patients, 36.6 ± 13.1 months; ATFL Only group: 21 patients, 35.3 ± 11.9 months). Functional outcomes were assessed using the Karlsson-Peterson and Tegner activity level scoring systems. Anterior talar translation (ATT), talar tilt angle (TTA), and degrees of displacement of the calcaneus against the talus on stress radiographs were measured. All parameters were compared between the two groups. Multiple regression analysis setting the postoperative Karlsson-Peterson score as the dependent variable was performed to determine the significant variable.
RESULTS
There were no significant differences between the two groups in functional (Karlsson-Peterson and Tegner activity level) scores at the last follow-up and their changes. There were no significant differences between the two groups in the ATT, TTA, their differences compared with the contralateral ankles, and degrees of displacement of the calcaneus against the talus at the last follow-up. Osteochondral lesion of the talus rather than CFL repair was the significant variable related to functional outcome.
CONCLUSIONS
The modified Broström procedure with additional CFL repair did not result in a significant advantage in any measured outcome at 3 years.

Abstract
The aim was to clarify the relationships between differences in the number of fiber bundles of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and differences in the angle of the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) with respect to the long axis of the fibula and their effects on ankle braking function.The study sample included 110 Japanese cadavers. ATFLs were categorized as: Type I with one fiber bundle; Type II with two fiber bundles with incomplete separation and complete separation; and Type III with three fiber bundles. The CFLs were categorized according to the angles of the CFLs with respect to the long axis of the fibula and the number of fiber bundles. Six categories were established: CFLCFL with respect to the long axis of the fibula from 10° to 19°); CFLCFLCFLCFLCFLCFLs with two crossing fiber bundles).ATFL was Type I in 34 legs (31%), Type II in 66 legs (60%), and Type III in 10 legs (9%). Five CFL categories were identified: CFLCFLCFLCFLCFLCFLCFLCFLATFL and CFL appear to cooperate in the ankle joint braking function.

Abstract
A quenching based apta-sensing platform was developed for the detection of Patulin. Three different aptamer sequences were studied to screen the aptamer with the maximum affinity towards Patulin. Carboxyfluorescein (CFL) was used as a fluorescent dye while -COOH functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were applied as novel nanoquenchers. Aptamer tagged at the 3' end with 40 nucleotide bases exhibited the maximum affinity towards Patulin and caused substantial fluorescence recovery. Interestingly, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were calculated as 0.13 μg L-1and 0.41 μg L-1 respectively. Commonly occurring mycotoxins in food were also tested to confirm the selectivity of apta-assay. The developed apta-assay was applied to a spiked apple juice sample and toxin recoveries were observed ranging from 96% to 98% (n = 3). These results demonstrated the potential of the developed apta-assay for the selective detection and quantification of Patulin in food samples.

Abstract
Purpose: Despite being a significant public health problem, ankle sprains' prognostic factors are largely unknown. This review aimed to systematically analyze the literature on acute ankle sprains to compare the prognosis of a combined anterior talofibular (ATFL) and calcaneofibular (CFL) ligaments rupture with an isolated ATFL rupture in terms of progression to chronic ankle instability and other clinical outcomes.
Methods: The databases for Pubmed, CENTRAL and Web of Science were searched. Clinical studies reporting the prognostic effect of combined ATFL-CFL rupture versus an isolated ATFL rupture in conservatively treated ankle sprains, with a minimum follow-up of 12 months, were eligible for inclusion. Only studies with a reliable diagnostic method for anterolateral ankle ligaments evaluation, namely ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, arthrography or stress tenography, were included. The relative risk (RR), along with the 95% confidence interval (CI), was used to quantitatively analyze the main outcomes.
Results: Nine papers were selected for inclusion, of which five were suitable for quantitative analysis. None of them found a statistically significant correlation between ligament injury severity and progression to chronic instability. Concerning other clinical outcomes, three studies found a statistically significant correlation between a combined ligament injury and a worse clinical prognosis. From the quantitative analysis, the relative risk (RR) of chronic ankle instability in a single versus a combined ligament rupture showed no significant difference.
Conclusion: A significant statistical correlation between a combined ATFL-CFL rupture and chronic ankle instability, compared to an isolated ATFL rupture, was not found. There is, however, fair evidence showing a worse clinical outcome score in the combined ruptures, as well as a decreased return to full sports activities. The use of reliable and accessible diagnostic methods to determine the number of ruptured ligaments might have a role in managing severe ankle sprains.

Abstract
Thermosensitive liposomes have demonstrated great potential for tumor-specific chemotherapy. Near infrared (NIR) dyes loaded liposomes have also shown improved photothermal effect in cancer theranostics. However, the instability of liposomes often causes premature release of drugs or dyes, impeding their antitumor efficacy. Herein, we fabricated a highly stable thermo-responsive bubble-generating liposomal nanohybrid cerasome with a silicate framework, combined with a NIR dye to achieve NIR light stimulated, tumor-specific, chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy. Methods: In this system, NIR dye of 1,1'-Dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'- Tetramethylindotricarbocyanine iodide (DiR) with long carbon chains was self-assembled with a cerasome-forming lipid (CFL) to encapsulate ammonium bicarbonate (ABC), which was further used for actively loading doxorubicin (DOX), affording a thermosensitive and photosensitive DOX-DiR@cerasome (ABC). Results: The resulting cerasome could disperse well in different media. Upon NIR light mediated thermal effect, ABC was decomposed to generate CO2 bubbles, resulting in a permeable channel in the cerasome bilayer that significantly enhanced DOX release. After intravenous injection into tumor-bearing mice, DOX-DiR@cerasome (ABC) could be efficiently accumulated at the tumor tissue, as monitored by DiR fluorescence, lasting for more than 5 days. NIR light irradiation was then performed at 36h to locally heat the tumors, resulting in immediate CO2 bubble generation, which could be clearly detected by ultrasound imaging, facilitating the monitoring process of controlled release of the drug. Significant antitumor efficacy could be obtained for the DOX-DiR@cerasome (ABC) + laser group, which was further confirmed by tumor tissue histological analysis.

Abstract
People with low vision, especially those with Central Field Loss (CFL), need magnification to read. The flexibility of Electronic Vision Enhancement Systems (EVES) offers several ways of magnifying text. Due to the restricted field of view of EVES, the need for magnification is conflicting with the need to navigate through text (panning). We have developed and implemented a real-time gaze-controlled system whose goal is to optimize the possibility of magnifying a portion of text while maintaining global viewing of the other portions of the text (condition 1). Two other conditions were implemented that mimicked commercially available advanced systems known as CCTV (closed-circuit television systems)-conditions 2 and 3. In these two conditions, magnification was uniformly applied to the whole text without any possibility to specifically select a region of interest. The three conditions were implemented on the same computer to remove differences that might have been induced by dissimilar equipment. A gaze-contingent artificial 10° scotoma (a mask continuously displayed in real time on the screen at the gaze location) was used in the three conditions in order to simulate macular degeneration. Ten healthy subjects with a gaze-contingent scotoma read aloud sentences from a French newspaper in nine experimental one-hour sessions. Reading speed was measured and constituted the main dependent variable to compare the three conditions. All subjects were able to use condition 1 and they found it slightly more comfortable to use than condition 2 (and similar to condition 3). Importantly, reading speed results did not show any significant difference between the three systems. In addition, learning curves were similar in the three conditions. This proof of concept study suggests that the principles underlying the gaze-controlled enhanced system might be further developed and fruitfully incorporated in different kinds of EVES for low vision reading.

Abstract
We report the topical administration of sponge Haliclona sp. Spicules (SHS) combined with cationic flexible liposomes (CFL) to increase the delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA) into viable skin cells in vitro and in vivo. SHS can be applied topically as novel microneedles to overcome skin barrier by creating plenty of new microchannels in stratum corneum. Subsequently, well-designed CFL can be also utilized topically as nanocarriers to overcome skin cells membrane by delivering siRNA to skin deep layers through these microchannels and thereby facilitating their cell internalization. The topical application of SHS in combination with CFL (0.05% of lipids, w/v), referred to as CFL(0.05%), enhanced siRNA skin penetration in vitro by 72.95 ± 2.97-fold compared to control group (p < 0.001). Further, the topical application of SHS in combination with CFL(0.05%) on female BALB/c mice skin resulted in 29.21% ± 1.41% of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) knockdown at all application area in vivo, which was not significantly different from the GAPDH protein knockdown rate in the subcutaneous injection center. However, the high knockdown rate only appears in the vicinity (<0.5 cm) of the injection center. In sum, this study provides a promising strategy of topical delivery of siRNA by the combined used of SHS and well-designed CFL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND
We performed a laboratory-based study of the ankle-hindfoot complex in normal cadaveric ankles with simulated lateral ankle ligament injuries, utilizing an ankle stability testing device. The ankle stability testing device distinguished between intact, injury to anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and combined injury to ATFL and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL).
METHODS
Ankles were tested in an ankle stability testing device, with a specified inversion torque applied through the range of sagittal plane motion, then internal rotation torque applied through the entire range of sagittal plane motion. Three-dimensional motion of the calcaneus and talus in relation to the tibia were determined with a magnetic tracking system. The specimens were tested in the intact condition, then after sectioning the ATFL, then the CFL.
RESULTS
Upon sectioning the ATFL, there was a significant increase in the internal rotation motion at the tibiotalar joint. Subsequent sectioning of the CFL did not significantly increase ankle-hindfoot internal rotation, but it did significantly increase the motion in inversion testing. This increase occurred primarily at the tibiotalar level.
CONCLUSIONS
The isolated ATFL injury was clearly distinguished from the intact condition by increased talar-tibial internal rotation, but not inversion. The more severe combined ATFL/CFL injury was distinguished from the ATFL injury condition with inversion torque.
CONCLUSIONS
Inversion torque may disclose combined ATFL/CFL injury, and internal rotation torque may be the key to distinguish isolated ATFL and combined ATFL/CFL injuries.

Abstract
Altered kinematics and persisting ankle instability have been associated with degenerative changes and osteochondral lesions.To study the effect of ligament reconstruction surgery with suture tape augmentation (isolated anterior talofibular ligament [ATFL] vs combined ATFL and calcaneofibular ligament [CFL]) after lateral ligament ruptures (combined ATFL and CFL) on foot-ankle kinematics during simulated gait.Controlled laboratory study.Five fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens were tested in a custom-built gait simulator in 5 different conditions: intact, ATFL rupture, ATFL-CFL rupture, ATFL-CFL reconstruction, and ATFL reconstruction. For each condition, range of motion (ROM) and the average angle (AA) in the hindfoot and midfoot joints were calculated during the stance phase of normal and inverted gait.Ligament ruptures mainly changed ROM in the hindfoot and the AA in the hindfoot and midfoot and influenced the kinematics in all 3 movement directions. Combined ligament reconstruction was able to restore ROM in inversion-eversion in 4 of the 5 joints and ROM in internal-external rotation and dorsiflexion-plantarflexion in 3 of the 5 joints. It was also able to restore the AA in inversion-eversion in 2 of the 5 joints, the AA in internal-external rotation in all joints, and the AA in dorsiflexion-plantarflexion in 1 of the joints. Isolated ATFL reconstruction was able to restore ROM in inversion-eversion and internal-external rotation in 3 of the 5 joints and ROM in dorsiflexion-plantarflexion in 2 of the 5 joints. Isolated reconstruction was also able to restore the AA in inversion-eversion and dorsiflexion-plantarflexion in 2 of the joints and the AA in internal-external rotation in 3 of the joints. Both isolated reconstruction and combined reconstruction were most successful in restoring motion in the tibiocalcaneal and talonavicular joints and least successful in restoring motion in the talocalcaneal joint. However, combined reconstruction was still better at restoring motion in the talocalcaneal joint than isolated reconstruction (1/3 for ROM and 1/3 for the AA with isolated reconstruction compared to 1/3 for ROM and 2/3 for the AA with combined reconstruction).Combined ATFL-CFL reconstruction showed better restored motion immediately after surgery than isolated ATFL reconstruction after a combined ATFL-CFL rupture.This study shows that ligament reconstruction with suture tape augmentation is able to partially restore kinematics in the hindfoot and midfoot at the time of surgery. In clinical applications, where the classic Broström-Gould technique is followed by augmentation with suture tape, this procedure may protect the repaired ligament during healing by limiting excessive ROM after a ligament rupture.

Abstract
The support of sustainable learning of foreign languages requires teacher engagement and a high level of self-efficacy, both of which are cornerstones for the persistence of teachers in carrying out teaching activities to help learning. The need for such attributes is even more crucial when online learning platforms as a mode of delivery are becoming increasingly popular. We would argue that keeping students engaged and motivated to attain their academic success online calls for the increased levels of resilience and efforts of teachers. Although self-efficacy of teachers has been widely considered crucial in the professional practices of teachers, there is a paucity of research studies on the self-efficacy of teachers who teach Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) using online platforms. Such a gap becomes prominent after the sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in places where there are now numerous calls for online CFL classes. In order to fill in this gap, this study was conducted with a frontline CFL teacher as the participant and aimed to detect thoroughly the trajectories of self-efficacy of a CFL teacher in a completely new teaching context. Embedded in the Project of Sino-Greece Online Chinese Language Classrooms, this study employed narrative inquiry and case study as methodological approaches. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data that consisted of written narratives (the teacher's teaching journals and reflections, field notes of teaching assistant, and emails of students) and spoken narratives. Three research questions guided this study: What are the teacher's beliefs about (1) the opportunity of teaching CFL online? (2) the management of this online project? (3) her personal capability to foster students' engagement in this project? These three questions focused, respectively, on the three components of the self-efficacy system of a teacher (personal efficacy, efficacy within the organization, and professional efficacy). Findings illustrated that the efficacy beliefs of the teacher in these three aspects were at different levels, which resulted from the interplay of external and internal factors; when external factors appeared to be negative, internal factors seemed to play an essential role.

Abstract
Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, X. campestris pv. armoraciae, and Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola are bacterial pathogens that cause leaf spot diseases on leafy crucifers in Oklahoma. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the cfl gene from the gene cluster encoding the phytotoxin coronatine was used to identify coronatine-producing strains of P. syringae, and the expected 0.65-kb PCR product was detected in 19 strains of P. syringae pv. maculicola originating from diseased crucifers in Oklahoma. A simple, rapid PCR method based on primers from the cfl gene was developed to detect coronatine-producing strains of P. syringae in planta. Pathogenicity tests confirmed the cfl-positive strains to be P. syringae pv. maculicola. To monitor the survival of X. campestris pv. armoraciae and P. syringae pv. maculicola in the field, turnip and collards were inoculated with rifampicin-resistant strains and were buried beneath the soil or left on the soil surface. Both pathogens were recovered from turnip and collard debris up to 2 months following burial, but neither pathogen was recovered from soil after the debris had decomposed. However, both pathogens were recovered from plant debris left on the soil surface for up to 5 months. Four production fields were surveyed for sources of inoculum of the bacterial pathogens from October 1999 to May 2000. X. campestris pv. campestris was isolated from the weed shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) in all fields, and from volunteer turnip and kale in three fields. X. campestris pv. campestris and P. syringae pv. maculicola were isolated from surface debris and regrowth from crop stubble left in one field after harvest in the fall. X. campestris pv. campestris was detected in 6 of 51 lots of crucifer seed assayed. X. campestris pv. armoraciae and P. syringae pv. maculicola were not recovered from weeds, volunteer plants, or seed lots.

Abstract
Fifty-five cases of t(14;18)- follicular lymphoma (FL) were genetically characterized by targeted sequencing and copy number (CN) arrays. t(14;18)- FL predominated in women (M/F 1:2); patients often presented during early clinical stages (71%), and had excellent prognoses. Overall, t(14;18)- FL displayed CN alterations (CNAs) and gene mutations carried by conventional t(14;18)+ FL (cFL), but with different frequencies. The most frequently mutated gene was STAT6 (57%) followed by CREBBP (49%), TNFRSF14 (39%), and KMT2D (27%). t(14;18)- FL showed significantly more STAT6 mutations and lacked MYD88, NOTCH2, MEF2B, and MAP2K1 mutations compared with cFL, nodal marginal zone lymphoma (NMZL), and pediatric-type FL (PTFL). We identified 2 molecular clusters. Cluster A was characterized by TNFRSF14 mutations/1p36 alterations (96%) and frequent mutations in epigenetic regulators, with recurrent loss of 6q21-24 sharing many features with cFL. Cluster B showed few genetic alterations; however, a subgroup with STAT6 mutations concurrent with CREBBP mutations/16p alterations without TNFRSF14 and EZH2 mutations was noted (65%). These 2 molecular clusters did not distinguish cases by inguinal localization, growth pattern, or presence of STAT6 mutations. BCL6 rearrangements were demonstrated in 10 of 45 (22%) cases and did not cluster together. Cases with predominantly inguinal presentation (20 of 50; 40%) had a higher frequency of diffuse growth pattern, STAT6 mutations, CD23 expression, and a lower number of CNAs, in comparison with noninguinal cases (5.1 vs 9.1 alterations per case; P < .05). STAT6 mutations showed a positive correlation with CD23 expression (P < .001). In summary, t(14;18)- FL is genetically a heterogeneous disorder with features that differ from cFL, NMZL, and PTFL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND
Treatments for upper facial lines (UFL), the most visible sign of aging, are of interest to patients and clinicians alike. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are valuable in evaluating the impact of such treatments; however, regulatory recommendations have stipulated that the patient perspective be central in developing these assessments.
OBJECTIVE
(1) To evaluate the content validity of the Facial Lines Outcomes Questionnaire, a PRO instrument developed to assess upper facial line impacts, according to the regulatory guidance of the United States Food and Drug Administration and (2) assess whether it adequately measures the psychological impacts associated with crow's feet lines (CFL) (lateral canthal lines) from the patient perspective.
METHODS
Two patient groups participated in face-to-face qualitative interviews. One group included patients with UFL (Group 1, n = 25 interviews), and the other included patients specifically with CFL (Group 2, n = 41 interviews). Each interview consisted of a concept elicitation and cognitive debriefing phase.
RESULTS
Interviews with both groups elicited all key concepts of the instrument, including "bothered by facial lines"; "looking older"; "looking less attractive"; and looking "tired," "stressed," or "angry." Most Group 2 patients (n = 35, 85%) agreed that the instrument adequately assessed the psychological impacts associated with CFL. During cognitive debriefing, the majority of patients in both groups agreed the instrument was understandable, comprehensive, and easy to complete.
CONCLUSIONS
The Facial Line Outcomes Questionnaire is an appropriate and valid tool to assess the impact of UFL and the psychological impacts associated with CFL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this study was to assess the differences between subtalar instability (STI) and lateral ankle instability (LAI) focusing on subtalar ligaments using 3-dimensional (3D) isotropic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS
Preoperative MRIs of 10 patients with STI who failed nonoperative treatment and consequently underwent arthroscopic subtalar reconstruction were compared with preoperative MRIs of 23 patients with LAI who underwent ligament repair or reconstruction. Dimensions of anterior capsular ligament (ACL), interosseous talocalcaneal ligament (ITCL), calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), and anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) were measured. Tears of ACL, ITCL, CFL, ATFL, cervical ligament, and inferior extensor retinaculum were analyzed.
RESULTS
Patients with subtalar instability had significantly lower ACL thickness and width than patients with LAI (thickness: 1.48 vs 2.12 mm, P = 0.045; width: 7.30 vs 8.64 mm, P = 0.029). An ACL thickness of 1.8 mm or less had sensitivity and specificity both at 75.0%, and an ACL width of 8 mm or less had sensitivity of 75.0% and specificity of 85.0% for discriminating STI from LAI. Absence or complete tear of ACL was more frequent in patients with STI than in patients with LAI (60.0% vs 13.0%, P = 0.010). The ATFL thickness was significantly greater in patients with LAI (P = 0.001). Complete tear of ATFL was more common in patients with LAI (P = 0.008). Complete tear of CFL was common in both the STI and LAI groups without significant difference (20.0% vs 21.7%). There was no significant difference in thickness and width of ITCL and in CFL thickness. Complete tear of ITCL, cervical ligament, and inferior extensor retinaculum were rare without significant difference.
CONCLUSIONS
In patients with STI, the ACL is thin and narrow and more commonly absent or torn compared with patients with LAI. Complete tear of ATFL was more common in patients with LAI. Complete tear of CFL was commonly encountered in both the STI and LAI groups.

Abstract
Field experiments for evaluating heat tolerance-related physiological traits were conducted for two consecutive years using a mapping population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from the cross RAJ4014/WH730. Chlorophyll content (Chl) and chlorophyll fluorescence (CFL) were recorded under timely sown (TS) and late sown (LS) conditions. Late sowing exposes the terminal stage of plants to high temperature stress. Pooled analysis showed that CFL and Chl differed significantly under TS and LS conditions. The mean value of CFL (Fv/Fm) and Chl under both timely and late sown conditions were used as physiological traits for association with markers. Regression analysis revealed significant association of microsatellite markers viz., Xpsp3094 and Xgwm131 with coefficients of determination (R (2)) values for CFL (Fv/Fm) and Chl as 12 and 8 %, respectively. The correlation between thousand grain weight (TGW) with Chl and CFL were 14 and 7 % and correlation between grain wt./spike with Chl and CFL were 15 and 8 %, respectively. The genotypes showing tolerance to terminal heat stress as manifested by low heat susceptibility index (HSI = 0.43) for thousand grain weight, were also found having very low Chl, HSI (-0.52). These results suggest that these physiological traits may be used as a secondary character for screening heat-tolerant genotypes.

Abstract
Chronic ankle instability has been described as presenting with complete tears of both the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) in 20% of cases. Arthroscopic techniques to treat chronic ankle instability are increasingly being reported and in some instances they can be technically demanding. The aim of this study was to describe an arthroscopic all-inside repair of both the ATFL and CFL, and to report the outcomes of a group of patients with chronic ankle instability that underwent the technique.Twenty-four patients [22 male and 2 female, median age 41 (range 22-56) years] with chronic ankle instability and torn ATFL and CFL were treated arthroscopically after failing non-operative management. Median follow-up was 35 (mean 34.7, and range 18-55) months. Through an arthroscopic all-inside technique, and using a suture passer and two knotless anchors, both fascicles of the ATFL and the CFL were repaired.Arthroscopic examination demonstrated ATFL and CFL injuries in all patients. Subjective improvement in their ankle instability was observed postoperatively. The anterior drawer and the talar tilt tests were negative at follow-up. The median AOFAS score increased from 65 (mean 65, range 52-85) preoperatively to 97 (mean 97, range 85-100) at final follow-up.Chronic ankle instability with concomitant injury of both the ATFL and CFL, can be successfully treated by an arthroscopic all-inside repair. The clinical relevance of the study is the description of the first arthroscopic all-inside ATFL and CFL anatomic repair technique, which offers excellent clinical results and the inherent benefits from minimally invasive surgery.IV, retrospective case series.

Abstract
BACKGROUND
The aim of this study was to analyze the pattern and types of sensory nerve endings in ankle collateral ligaments using histological techniques, in order to observe the morphology and distribution of mechanoreceptors in the collateral ligaments of cadaver ankle joint, and to provide the morphological evidence for the role of the ligament in joint sensory function.
METHODS
Twelve lateral collateral ligaments including anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL; n = 6), posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL; n = 6), and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL; n = 6) were harvested from six fresh frozen cadavers. The ligaments were embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 4 μm, and then stained using a modified gold-chloride staining methods. The collateral ligament was divided into three segments: proximal, middle, and distal segments. Fifty-four ATFL slides, 90 PTFL slides, and 108 CFL slides were analyzed. Mechanoreceptors were classified based on Freemen and Wyke's classification. Mechanoreceptor distribution was analyzed statistically. One-way ANOVA (postHoc LSD) was used for statistical analysis.
RESULTS
All the four typical types of nerve endings (the Ruffini corpuscles, Pacinian corpuscles, Golgi tendon organs, and free nerve endings) were identified in these ligaments. Pacinian corpuscles were the predominant in all four complexes. More mechanoreceptors were found in synovial membrane near both ends of the ligaments attached to the bone. No statistical differences were found in the amount of mechanoreceptors among distal, middle, and proximal parts of the ligaments.
CONCLUSIONS
The four typical types of mechanoreceptors were all identified in the collateral ligaments of the human ankle. Pacinian corpuscles were the predominant in all four complexes. This indicates that the main function of ankle collateral ligaments is to sense joint speeds in motions.

Abstract
Chemical defences are widespread in nature, yet we know little about whether and how climatic and geographic factors affect their evolution. In this study, we investigated the natural variation in the concentration and composition of the main bufogenin toxin in adult Asian toads (Bufo gargarizans Cantor) captured in twenty-two regions. Moreover, we explored the relative importance of eight climatic factors (average temperature, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, average relative humidity, 20-20 time precipitation, maximum continuous precipitation, maximum ground temperature, and minimum ground temperature) in regulating toxin production. We found that compared to toads captured from central and southwestern China, toads from eastern China secreted higher concentrations of cinobufagin (CBG) and resibufogenin (RBG) but lower concentrations of telocinobufagin (TBG) and cinobufotalin (CFL). All 8 climatic variables had significant effects on bufogenin production (ri>0.5), while the plastic response of bufogenin toxin to various climate factors was highly variable. The most important climatic driver of total bufogenin production was precipitation: the bufogenin concentration increased with increasing precipitation. This study indicated that the evolution of phenotypic plasticity in chemical defences may depend at least partly on the geographic variation of defensive toxins and their climatic context.

Abstract
Human red blood cells (RBCs) were perfused in a circular micro-tube (inner diameter of 25 μm) to examine the dynamic changes of cell-free marginal region at both physiological (normal) and pathophysiological (hyper) levels of RBC aggregation. The cell-free area (CFA) was measured to provide additional information on the cell-free layer (CFL) width changes in space and time domains. A prominent enhancement in the mean CFL width was found in hyper-aggregating conditions as compared to that in non-aggregating conditions (P < 0.001). The frequent contacts between RBC and the tube wall were observed and the contact frequency was greatly decreased when the aggregation level was increased from none to normal (P < 0.05) and to hyper (P < 0.001) levels. In addition, the enhanced aggregation from none to hyper levels significantly enlarged the CFA (P < 0.01). We concluded that the RBC aggregation at pathophysiological levels could promote not only the CFL width (one-dimensional parameter) but also the spatiotemporal variation of CFA (two-dimensional parameter).

Abstract
Mercury release after breakage of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) has recently become an issue of public health concern, especially in the case of early life infants. Preliminary, screening type calculations have indicated that there is potential for increased intake of mercury vapor by inhalation after breakage of a CFL. Several experimental and computational studies have shown that, when modeling the breakage of a CFL, the room space must be segregated into different zones, according to the potential of mercury vapor to accumulate in them after accidental release. In this study, a detailed two-zone model that captures the physicochemical processes that govern mercury vapor formation and dispersion in the indoor environment was developed. The mercury fate model was coupled to a population exposure model that accounts for age and gender-related differences in time-activity patterns, as well as country differences in body weight and age distribution. The parameters above are used to determine the intake through inhalation (gas phase and particles) and non-dietary ingestion (settled dust) for each age, gender group and ethnicity. Results showed that the critical period for intake covers the first 4h after the CFL breaks and that room air temperature significantly affects the intake rate. Indoor air concentration of mercury vapor may exceed toxicological thresholds of concern such as the acute Reference Exposure Limit (REL) for mercury vapor set by the Environmental Protection Agency of California. Ingestion intake through hand-to-mouth behavior is significant for infants and toddlers, counting for about 20% of the overall intake. Simple risk reduction measures including increased indoor ventilation followed by careful clean-up of the accident site, may limit dramatically the estimated health risk.

Abstract
Subtalar joint instability is hypothesized to occur after injuries to the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) in isolation or in combination with the cervical and the talocalcaneal interosseous ligaments. A common treatment for hindfoot instability is the application of an ankle brace. However, the ability of an ankle brace to promote subtalar joint stability is not well established. We assessed the kinematics of the subtalar joint, ankle, and hindfoot in the presence of isolated subtalar instability, investigated the effect of bracing in a CFL deficient foot and with a total rupture of the intrinsic ligaments, and evaluated how maximum inversion range of motion is affected by the position of the ankle in the sagittal plane. Kinematics from nine cadaveric feet were collected with the foot placed in neutral, dorsiflexion, and plantar flexion. Motion was applied with and without a brace on an intact foot and after sequentially sectioning the CFL and the intrinsic ligaments. Isolated CFL sectioning increased ankle joint inversion, while sectioning the CFL and intrinsic ligaments affected subtalar joint stability. The brace limited inversion at the subtalar and ankle joints. Additionally, examining the foot in dorsiflexion reduced ankle and subtalar joint motion.
