Abstract
The phenolic composition of heartwood extracts from Fraxinus excelsior L. and F. americana L., both before and after toasting in cooperage, was studied using LC-DAD/ESI-MS/MS. Low-molecular weight (LMW) phenolic compounds, secoiridoids, phenylethanoid glycosides, dilignols and oligolignols compounds were detected, and 48 were identified, or tentatively characterized, on the basis of their retention time, UV/Vis and MS spectra, and MS fragmentation patterns. Some LMW phenolic compounds like protocatechuic acid and aldehyde, hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, were unlike to those for oak wood, while ellagic and gallic acid were not found. The toasting of wood resulted in a progressive increase in lignin degradation products with regard to toasting intensity. The levels of some of these compounds in medium-toasted ash woods were much higher than those normally detected in toasted oak, highlighting vanillin levels, thus a more pronounced vanilla character can be expected when using toasted ash wood in the aging wines. Moreover, in seasoned wood, we found a great variety of phenolic compounds which had not been found in oak wood, especially oleuropein, ligstroside and olivil, along with verbascoside and isoverbascoside in F. excelsior, and oleoside in F. americana. Toasting mainly provoked their degradation, thus in medium-toasted wood, only four of them were detected. This resulted in a minor differentiation between toasted ash and oak woods. The absence of tannins in ash wood, which are very important in oak wood, is another peculiar characteristic that should be taken into account when considering its use in cooperage.

Abstract
Rhodiola L. has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has shown great promise in recent clinical trials. Salidroside and tyrosol are two important active compounds present in this TCM. In this work, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) followed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a photodiode array detector (DAD) was developed for quantitative analysis of salidroside and tyrosol in Rhodiola L. samples. After systematical investigation, the optimal experimental parameters of soak time (60 min), extraction solvent volume (1g sample, 5 mL), extract solvent composition (50% methanol/water), microwave power (400 W) and extraction time (5 min) were investigated. The optimized method provided satisfactory precision (R.S.D. values less than 7.5%), good recovery (from 94.4 to 123%), and good linear relation in the range of 5.0-500 microg/mL for salidroside and 1.0-100 microg/mL for tyrosol (R2>0.999). The proposed method was applied to quantitative analysis of salidroside and tyrosol in Rhodiola L. samples from five different growing areas. To demonstrate the method feasibility, recirculation was also used to analyze salidroside and tyrosol in Rhodiola L. samples. The proposed MAE-HPLC-DAD is a simple, rapid and low-cost method for quantitative analysis of salidroside and tyrosol, and a potential tool for quality assessment of Rhodiola L. sample.

Abstract
p-Tyrosol is a phenolic compound present in different dietary sources that can exert mild antioxidant properties based on in vitro and in vivo studies. In our study, two p-tyrosol derivatives (p-tyrosyl gallate and p-tyrosyl acetate) were synthesized and compared together with p-tyrosol and gallic acid for their cytotoxic activities on human cancer cells. p-Tyrosyl gallate had the most potent cytotoxicity and the major cytotoxic mechanism of its action was studied. We found that in HeLa cells, p-tyrosyl gallate can effectively induce cell cycle arrest during S phase and inhibited in vitro simian virus (SV40 DNA) replication. In addition, p-tyrosyl gallate can inhibit three important functional replication proteins (topoisomerase I, RPA and pol alpha-primase), especially pol alpha-primase. These results suggest that p-tyrosyl gallate-induced cell cycle arrest during S phase correlates with the inhibition of DNA replication. Pol alpha-primase may be the main target molecule. Taken together, we suggest that p-tyrosyl gallate is a strong anticancer drug candidate that warrants further investigation.

Abstract
Polyphenols, which include phenolic acids, flavonoids, stilbenes, and phenylethanoids, are generally known as useful antioxidants. Tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol, and salidroside are typical phenylethanoids. Phenylethanoids are found in plants such as olive, green tea, and Rhodiola and have various biological activities, including the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and brain damage. We used Escherichia coli to synthesize three phenylethanoids, tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol, and salidroside. To synthesize tyrosol, the aromatic aldehyde synthase (AAS) was expressed in E. coli. Hydroxytyrosol was synthesized using E. coli harboring AAS and HpaBC, which encodes hydroxylase. In order to synthesize salidroside, 12 uridine diphosphate-dependent glycosyltransferases (UGTs) were screened and UGT85A1 was found to convert tyrosol to salidroside. Using E. coli harboring AAS and UGT85A1, salidroside was synthesized. Through the optimization of these three E. coli strains, we were able to synthesize 531 mg/L tyrosol, 208 mg/L hydroxytyrosol, and 288 mg/L salidroside, respectively.

Abstract
The composition of the equilibrium between aldehydes and hemiacetals was evaluated by ionspray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. The methanolic extracts of virgin olive oil from Carolea and Coratina cultivars contain a complex mixture of hydroxytyrosol (3) and tyrosol (4) derivatives (5, 6) characterized by the presence of aldehyde moieties in equilibrium with their hydrated form (8) or with the corresponding methanol hemiacetals 9 and 10. The equilibrium was frozen by droplet evaporation, thus allowing the structure determination of each component. The formation of the decarboxylated species 11-14, reported previously, was not observed.

Abstract
Olive oil is an integral ingredient of the "Mediterranean diet". The olive oil industry generates large quantities of a by-product called "alperujo" (AL) during the two-phase centrifugation system developed in the early nineties. AL could be a potent exploitable source of natural phenolic antioxidants. Our results showed that AL and its distinctive phenols hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and verbascoside were not genotoxic in the Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test (SMART) of Drosophila melanogaster and exerted antigenotoxic activity against DNA oxidative damage generated by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Alperujo and hydroxytyrosol also exhibited notable antiproliferative and caspase 3-dependent proapoptotic effects toward the human tumoral cell line HL60. AL can provide a cheap and efficient source of chemopreventive phenolic compounds with strong antioxidant properties, becoming a promising and potent therapeutic drug in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE
This study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels on the seminal plasma (SP) metabolite milieu and sperm dysfunction.
METHODS
Semen specimens of 151 normozoospermic men were analyzed for ROS by chemiluminescence and classified according to seminal ROS levels [in relative light units (RLU)/s/106 sperm]: group 1 (n = 39): low (ROS < 20), group 2 (n = 38): mild (20 ≤ ROS < 40), group 3 (n = 31): moderate (40 ≤ ROS < 60), and group 4 (n = 43): high (ROS ≥ 60). A comprehensive analysis of SP and semen parameters, including conventional semen characteristics, measurement of total antioxidant capacity (TAC), sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI), chromatin maturation index (CMI), H19-Igf2 methylation status, and untargeted seminal metabolic profiling using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR), was carried out.
RESULTS
The methylation status of H19 and Igf2 was significantly different in specimens with high ROS (P < 0.005). Metabolic fingerprinting of these SP samples showed upregulation of trimethylamine N-oxide (P < 0.001) and downregulations of tryptophan (P < 0.05) and tyrosine/tyrosol (P < 0.01). High ROS significantly reduced total sperm motility (P < 0.05), sperm concentration (P < 0.001), and seminal TAC (P < 0.001) but increased CMI and DFI (P < 0.005). ROS levels have a positive correlation with Igf2 methylation (r = 0.19, P < 0.05), DFI (r = 0.40, P < 0.001), CMI (r = 0.39, P < 0.001), and trimethylamine N-oxide (r = 0.45, P < 0.05) and a negative correlation with H19 methylation (r = - 0.20, P < 0.05), tryptophan (r = - 0.45, P < 0.05), sperm motility (r = - 0.20, P < 0.05), sperm viability (r = - 0.23, P < 0.01), and sperm concentration (r = - 0.30, P < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
Results showed significant correlation between ROS levels and H19-Igf2 gene methylation as well as semen parameters. These findings are critical to identify idiopathic male infertility and its management through assisted reproduction technology (ART).

Abstract
The kinetic behavior and protein-expression level of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) have been determined in the leaves of the olive tree (Olea europaea L.) of cv. Picual, Verdial, Arbequina, and Frantoio during fruit ripening. Moreover, the concentration of total phenolic compounds, oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and tyrosol has been also determined. This study was carried out in 20-year-old olive trees grown in Jaén (Spain). The concentration of total and specific phenols showed a specific pattern in each cultivar. Frantoio showed the highest phenol concentration followed by Arbequina, Picual, and Verdial. A coordinated response between PAL, PPO, and the concentration of total phenols in the four cultivars was found. Also, specific changes were shown over the course of ripening, indicating a regulation of PAL, PPO, and phenol concentration in the olive-tree leaves during fruit ripening.

Abstract
Salidroside is one of the major phenolic glycosides in Rhodiola, which has been reported to possess various biological activities. In the present study the in vivo deglycosylation metabolism of salidroside was investigated and its aglycone p-tyrosol but not the original salidroside was identified as the main form in rat tissues following the administration of salidroside. After the i.v. administration of salidroside at a dose of 50 mg/kg in rats, salidroside was quantified only in the liver, kidney and heart tissues. The highest level of p-tyrosol was detected in the heart, followed by the spleen, kidney, liver and lungs, in order. Salidroside was detected only in the liver, in contrast, p-tyrosol was detectable in most tissues except the brain, and the kidney tissues contained a significant amount of p-tyrosol compared to the other tissues after the i.g. administration of 100 mg/kg salidroside. The excretion behaviour revealed that the administrated salidroside mainly eliminated in the form of salidroside but not its aglycone metabolite p-tyrosol through urine. After i.v. and i.g. administration in rats, 64.00% and 23.80% of the total dose was excreted through urine in the form of salidroside, respectively. In addition, 0.19% and 2.25% of the dose was excreted in the form of p-tyrosol through urine after i.v. and i.g. administration, respectively. The faecal salidroside and p-tyrosol concentrations were 0.3% and 1.48% of the total dose after i.v. administration, respectively. After the i.g. administration of salidroside, trace salidroside and p-tyrosol were quantified in faeces within 72 h. In addition, the biliary excretion levels of salidroside after i.v. and i.g. administration were 2.86% and 0.02% of the dose, respectively. The obtained results show that salidroside was extensively metabolised to its aglycone p-tyrosol and distributed to various organs and the original salidroside was cleared rapidly through urine following the administration of salidroside.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder involving α-synuclein (α-syn) aggregation, oxidative stress, dysregulation of redox metal homeostasis, and neurotoxicity. Different phenolic compounds with known antioxidant or antichelating properties have been shown to also interfere with aggregation of amyloid proteins and modulate intracellular signaling pathways. The present study aims to investigate for the first time the effect of tyrosol (TYR), a simple phenol present in extra-virgin olive oil, on α-syn aggregation in a Caenorhabditis elegans model of PD and evaluate its potential to prevent α-syn toxicity, neurodegeneration, and oxidative stress in this model organism. Our results show that TYR is effective in reducing α-syn inclusions, resulting in a lower toxicity and extended life span of treated nematodes. Moreover, TYR delayed α-syn-dependent degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in vivo. TYR treatment also reduced reactive oxygen species level and promoted the expression of specific chaperones and antioxidant enzymes. Overall, our study puts into perspective TYR potential to be considered as nutraceutical that targets pivotal causal factors in PD.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is one of the most prevalent reasons for premature death in adults. Despite the several conventional drugs in the market; many patients are not completely treated. Here we comprehensively review current clinical evidence regarding the efficacy of dietary polyphenols in atherosclerosis and related complications. PubMed, Cochrane library and Scopus were searched from inception until August 2016 to obtain clinical trials in which polyphenols were evaluated in cardiovascular parameters related to atherosclerosis. From total of 13031 results, 49 clinical trials were finally included. Tyrosol derivatives from virgin olive oil, catechins and theaflavins from green and black tea, cocoa polyphenols, and red grape resveratrol, as well as anthocyanins were the most studied polyphenolic compounds which could regulate lipid profile, inflammation and oxidative stress, blood pressure, endothelial function, and cell adhesion molecules. The most important limitations of the included trials were small sample size, short follow up, and unqualified methodology. Future well-designed clinical trials are necessary to provide better level of evidence for clinical decision making.

Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) triggers crucial signaling processes that regulate tumor angiogenesis and, therefore, represents an attractive target for the development of novel anticancer therapeutics. Several epidemiological studies have confirmed that abundant consumption of foods from plant origin is associated with reduced risk of developing cancers. In the Mediterranean basin, the consumption of extra virgin olive oil is an important constituent of the diet. Compared to other vegetable oils, the presence of several phenolic antioxidants in olive oil is believed to prevent the occurrence of a variety of pathological processes, such as cancer. While the strong antioxidant potential of these molecules is well characterized, their antiangiogenic activities remain unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate whether tyrosol (Tyr), hydroxytyrosol (HT), taxifolin (Tax), oleuropein (OL) and oleic acid (OA), five compounds contained in extra virgin olive oil, can affect in vitro angiogenesis. We found that HT, Tax and OA were the most potent angiogenesis inhibitors through their inhibitory effect on specific autophosphorylation sites of VEGFR-2 (Tyr951, Tyr1059, Tyr1175 and Tyr1214) leading to the inhibition of endothelial cell (EC) signaling. Inhibition of VEGFR-2 by these olive oil compounds significantly reduced VEGF-induced EC proliferation and migration as well as their morphogenic differentiation into capillary-like tubular structures in Matrigel. Our study demonstrates that HT, Tax and OA are novel and potent inhibitors of the VEGFR-2 signaling pathway. These findings emphasize the chemopreventive properties of olive oil and highlight the importance of nutrition in cancer prevention.

Abstract
Several naturally occurring dietary polyphenols with chemopreventive or anticancer properties are topoisomerase II poisons. To identify additional phytochemicals that enhance topoisomerase II-mediated DNA cleavage, a library of 341 Mediterranean plant extracts was screened for activity against human topoisomerase IIα. An extract from Phillyrea latifolia L., a member of the olive tree family, displayed high activity against the human enzyme. On the basis of previous metabolomics studies, we identified several polyphenols (hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein, verbascoside, tyrosol, and caffeic acid) as potential candidates for topoisomerase II poisons. Of these, hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein, and verbascoside enhanced topoisomerase II-mediated DNA cleavage. The potency of these olive metabolites increased 10-100-fold in the presence of an oxidant. Hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein, and verbascoside displayed hallmark characteristics of covalent topoisomerase II poisons. (1) The activity of the metabolites was abrogated by a reducing agent. (2) Compounds inhibited topoisomerase II activity when they were incubated with the enzyme prior to the addition of DNA. (3) Compounds were unable to poison a topoisomerase IIα construct that lacked the N-terminal domain. Because hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein, and verbascoside are broadly distributed across the olive family, extracts from the leaves, bark, and fruit of 11 olive tree species were tested for activity against human topoisomerase IIα. Several of the extracts enhanced enzyme-mediated DNA cleavage. Finally, a commercial olive leaf supplement and extra virgin olive oils pressed from a variety of Olea europea subspecies enhanced DNA cleavage mediated by topoisomerase IIα. Thus, olive metabolites appear to act as topoisomerase II poisons in complex formulations intended for human dietary consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND
Salidroside is a biologically active compound derived from Rhodiola rosea L. Studies showed that salidroside after i.v. injection is extensively metabolized to p-tyrosol and only trace amounts of salidroside are found in the brain tissue.
OBJECTIVE
The aim of the study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of p-tyrosol in the global cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (GCI) model.
METHODS
A total of 103 Wistar rats were assigned to groups of sham-operated (n=10), control (n=42), p-tyrosol-treated (n=36), and pentoxifylline-treated (n=15) animals. The rats of control, p-tyrosol-treated, and pentoxifylline-treated groups received intravenously 0.9% NaCl solution, 2% solution of p-tyrosol in doses of 5mg/kg, 10mg/kg, and 20mg/kg, and pentoxifylline in a dose of 100mg/kg, respectively, daily for 5 days. Rats were examined at days 1, 3, and 5 after GCI. After evaluation of neurological deficit, animals were euthanized for morphological and biochemical characterization.
METHODS
Rats of control, p-tyrosol-treated, and pentoxifylline-treated groups were exposed to three-vessel model of GCI. Neurological deficit, numeric density of neurons in hippocampal CA1 region, and percentage of neurons with focal and total chromatolysis were studied. Biochemical study assessed contents of conjugated dienes and fluorescent products in brain homogenate.
RESULTS
In control group, only 50.0% of rats survived by day 5 after the GCI; 38.1% of survived animals had severe neurologic deficit. In brain tissue of PTX-treated rats, the levels of diene conjugates and fluorescent products were 79% and 73%, respectivley, at day 5 compared with control. Differences in diene conjugates were statistically significant compared with control. The survival rate of animals treated with 20mg/kg p-tyrosol was 82.3% at day 5 after GCI. In p-tyrosol-treated GCI rats, the numeric density of neurons in the hippocampal CA1 region was higher by 31% compared with control. The percentage of neurons with focal and total chromatolysis decreased by 27% and 43%, respectively. At day 5 after GCI, the levels of conjugated dienes and fluorescent products were significantly lower (by 37% and 45%, respectively) in group of animals treated with 20mg/kg p-tyrosol compared with control. Moderate neuroprotective effects of 5mg/kg p-tyrosol administration were documented only at day 5 after GCI. In case of 10mg/kg p-tyrosol administration, neuroprotection was documented sooner: at day 1 or 3 after GCI. However, administration of 5 and 10mg/kg p-tyrosol did not affect animal survival.
CONCLUSIONS
Course administration of intravenous p-tyrosol in a dose of 20mg/kg increased survival, reduced neurological deficit after GCI, attenuated neuronal damage in the hippocampus, and attenuated lipid peroxidation in brain tissue in animals subject to GCI with reperfusion.

Abstract
Anoxia modulates the expression of molecules associated with endothelial dysfunction and vascular diseases. Polyphenols have potent antioxidant properties due to their ability to modulate genes involved in oxidative tissue damage. In this study, we investigated the effect of polyphenol extract from olive pomace (PEOP) and its main constituents, Tyrosol and Oleuropein, on endothelial cells subjected to anoxia by evaluating the expression of molecules critical for endothelial function, proliferation and migration, and the signaling pathway involved. EAhy926 human endothelial cells were exposed to anoxic stress in the presence or absence of PEOP. Anoxia increased the nitric oxide (NO) level and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα). These effects were prevented by PEOP treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, PEOP prevented the proliferation and migration associated with anoxia in EAhy926 cells, down-regulated the levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-9 and membrane type-1 MMP (MT1-MMP) and increased tissue MMP inhibitor-1 (TIMP-1) expression. Purified Oleuropein or Tyrosol restored to a basal level the anoxia-induced expression of MMP-9 and partially of MMP-2. The expression of TNFα was reduced by both polyphenols in a dose-dependent manner, but more efficiently by Tyrosol. Conversely, Oleuropein and Tyrosol had no significant effects on iNOS, COX-2 and TIMP-1 expression when used at the concentration found in PEOP. PEOP induced a time-dependent phosphorylation of p38 MAPK and ERK1/2 and inhibited anoxia-induced NF-κB activation. PEOP treatment restores the endothelial functions that are impaired by anoxia by regulating the expression of genes involved in proteolysis, angiogenesis and inflammation more efficiently than the single purified components. Therefore, the combined use of polyphenols, as in PEOP, could represent a powerful tool for the treatment and chemoprevention of endothelial dysfunction-associated vascular diseases.

Abstract
The infection of grazing ruminants with gastro-intestinal nematodes (GINs) is a severe problem in the Middle East. However, goats that graze the south-western slopes of the Carmel Heights in Israel have very low faecal egg counts, despite high grazing density. We hypothesized that polyphenols from Pistacia lentiscus L. and/or Phillyrea latifolia L. - both prevalent woody species of the region that are consumed by goats - have anthelmintic bioactivity. We tested this hypothesis by using the larval exsheathment inhibition assay (LEIA). Extracts were prepared from leaves of either plant species using 70% ethanol (E70), 100% ethanol (E100), or boiling water (W). Larvae were incubated in a phosphate-buffered saline solution with or without plant extract (1200μg/ml) and then exposed to an exsheathment solution expected to elicit 100% exsheathment after one hour. All extraction methods of P. lentiscus were highly effective at inhibiting larval exsheathment, but higher potency was found for the E70 than for E100 extraction method, while W was intermediate. Only the E70 extract of P. latifolia was highly effective relative to the control. The E70 extract of P. lentiscus had more than 7 times the potency of the E70 extract of P. latifolia. Irrespective of solvent and tannin-equivalent used, P. lentiscus contained more than double the quantity of total polyphenols than P. latifolia. The polyphenols of P. lentiscus consisted mainly of galloyl derivatives (63.6%), flavonol glucosides (28.6%), and catechin (7.8%). In P. latifolia, oleuropein and its derivative tyrosol accounted for 49.3 and 23.1% of phenolics, respectively, the remainder being flavones (luteolin and quercetin) and their glucoside derivatives. Results of the LEIA test suggest that extracts of tannin-rich plants interfere with the very early stage of host invasion and that high concentration of galloylated derivatives may explain anthelmintic activity.

Abstract
A carotenoid-rich extract from Lycium barbarum L. was added to extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), obtaining a carotenoid-enriched oil (EVOOCar). The oxidative stability of EVOO and EVOOCar was evaluated during long-term storage of 28 weeks at room temperature, by measuring some classical parameters (acidity and peroxide values, spectrophotometric coefficients, fatty acid composition) and the content of minor compounds (i.e., α-tocopherol and lutein). At the end of the storage, higher content (p < 0.01) of α-tocopherol in EVOOCar in respect to EVOO were observed. Zeaxanthin dipalmitate, the most abundant carotenoid compound of Goji berries, decreased slightly (p < 0.05) in EVOOCar until the end of the storage. In regard to polyphenols, an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC/QTOF-MS) using untargeted metabolomics was carried out. This latter approach discriminated the two oil samples during long-term storage, allowing to identify also the phenolic classes most exposed to significant variations during storage (i.e., mainly lignans and flavones). Besides, the addition of Goji carotenoids preserved the stability of tyrosol equivalents in EVOOCar during long-term storage. These results highlighted that the enrichment of EVOO with a carotenoid-rich extract can improve the shelf-life and nutritional value of added-oil, protecting EVOO natural antioxidants during long-term storage.

Abstract
Background: Fructus Ligustri Lucidi (FLL) has now attracted increasing attention as an alternative medicine in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. This study aimed to provide a general review of traditional interpretation of the actions of FLL in osteoporosis, main phytochemical constituents, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology in bone improving effect, and safety. Materials and Methods: Several databases, including PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, National Science and Technology Library, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Web of Science were consulted to locate publications pertaining to FLL. The initial inquiry was conducted for the presence of the following keywords combinations in the abstracts: Fructus Ligustri Lucidi, osteoporosis, phytochemistry, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, salidroside. About 150 research papers and reviews were consulted. Results: FLL is assumed to exhibit anti-osteoporotic effects by improving liver and kidney deficiencies and reducing lower back soreness in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The data from animal and cell experiments demonstrate that FLL is able to improve bone metabolism and bone quality in ovariectomized, growing, aged and diabetic rats through the regulation of PTH/FGF-23/1,25-(OH)₂D₃/CaSR, Nox4/ROS/NF-κB, and OPG/RANKL/cathepsin K signaling pathways. More than 100 individual compounds have been isolated from this plant. Oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, salidroside, and nuzhenide have been reported to exhibit the anti-osteoporosis effect. The pharmacokinetics data reveals that salidroside is one of the active constituents, and that tyrosol is hard to detect under physiological conditions. Acute and subacute toxicity studies show that FLL is well tolerated and presents no safety concerns. Conclusions: FLL provides a new option for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, which attracts rising interests in identifying potential anti-osteoporotic compounds and fractions from this plant. Further scientific evidences are expected from well-designed clinical trials on its bone protective effects and safety.

Abstract
Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with beneficial effects on human health. Specifically, consumption of red wine and beer has shown a J-shape relation with many important diseases. While a role of ethanol cannot be excluded, the high content of polyphenols in both beverages has been proposed to contribute to these effects, with beer having the advantage over wine that it is lower in alcohol. In addition to ethanol, beer contains a wide variety of compounds with known medicinal potential such as kaempferol, quercetin, tyrosol and phenolic acids, and it is the main dietary source for the flavones xanthohumol and 8-prenylnaringenin, and bitter acids such as humulones and lupulones. Clinical and pre-clinical evidence for the protective effects of moderate beer consumption against cardiovascular disease and other diseases has been accumulating since the 1990s, and the non-alcoholic compounds of beer likely exert most of the observed beneficial effects. In this review, we summarize and discuss the effects of beer consumption in health and disease as well as the clinical potential of its non-alcoholic compounds which may be promising candidates for new therapies against common chronic diseases.

Abstract
The quality of olive oils is sensorially tested by accurate and well established methods. It enables the classification of the pressed oils into the classes of extra virgin oil, virgin oil and lampant oil. Nonetheless, it would be convenient to have analytical methods for screening oils or supporting sensorial analysis using a reliable independent approach based on exploitation of mass spectrometric methodologies. A number of methods have been proposed to evaluate deficiencies of extra virgin olive oils resulting from inappropriate technological treatments, such as high or low temperature deodoration, and home cooking processes. The quality and nutraceutical value of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) can be related to the antioxidant property of its phenolic compounds. Olive oil is a source of at least 30 phenolic compounds, such as oleuropein, oleocanthal, hydroxytyrosol, and tyrosol, all acting as strong antioxidants, radical scavengers and NSAI-like drugs. We now report the efficacy of MRM tandem mass spectrometry, assisted by the isotope dilution assay, in the evaluation of the thermal stability of selected active principles of extra virgin olive oil.

Abstract
Phytotoxic metabolites produced in liquid culture by six species of Lasiodiplodia isolated in Brazil and causing Botryosphaeria dieback of grapevine were chemically identified. As ascertained by LC/MS, L. brasiliense, L. crassispora, L. jatrophicola, and L. pseudotheobromae produced jasmonic acid, and L. brasiliense synthesized, besides jasmonic acid, also (3R,4S)-4-hydroxymellein. L. euphorbicola and L. hormozganensis produced some low molecular weight lipophilic toxins. Specifically, L. euphorbicola produced (-)-mellein, (3R,4R)-(-)- and (3R,4S)-(-)-4-hydroxymellein, and tyrosol, and L. hormozganensis synthesized tyrosol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. This is the first report on the production of the above cited metabolites from L. euphorbicola and L. hormozganensis. The phytotoxic activity of the metabolites produced is also discussed and related to the symptoms these pathogens cause in the grapevine host plants.

Abstract
As components of the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) olive polyphenols may play a crucial role for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since mitochondrial dysfunction is involved in both, brain ageing and early AD, effects of 10 different purified phenolic secoiridoids (hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, oleacein, oleuroside, oleuroside aglycon, oleuropein, oleocanthal, ligstroside, ligstroside aglycone and ligustaloside B) and two metabolites (the plant metabolite elenolic acid and the mammalian metabolite homovanillic acid) were tested in very low doses on mitochondrial function in SH-SY5Y-APP695 cells - a cellular model of early AD. All tested secoiridoids significantly increased basal ATP levels in SY5Y-APP695 cells. Oleacein, oleuroside, oleocanthal and ligstroside showed the highest effect on ATP levels and were additionally tested on mitochondrial respiration. Only oleocanthal and ligstroside were able to enhance the capacity of respiratory chain complexes. To investigate their underlying molecular mechanism, the expression of genes associated with mitochondrial biogenesis, respiration and antioxidative capacity (PGC1-α, SIRT1, CREB1, NRF1, TFAM, complex I, IV and V, GPx1, SOD2, CAT) were determined using RT-PCR. Exclusively ligstroside increased mRNA expression of SIRT1, CREB1, complex I, and GPx1. Furthermore, oleocanthal but not ligstroside decreased Aβ 1-40 levels in SH-SY5Y-APP695 cells. To investigate the in vivo effects of purified secoiridoids, the two most promising compounds (oleocanthal and ligstroside) were tested in a mouse model of ageing. Female NMRI mice, aged 12 months, received a diet supplemented with 50 mg/kg diet oleocanthal or ligstroside for 6 months (equivalent to 6.25 mg/kg b.w.). Young (3 months) and aged (18 months) mice served as controls. Ligstroside fed mice showed improved spatial working memory. Furthermore, ligstroside restored brain ATP levels in aged mice and led to a significant life extension compared to aged control animals. Our findings indicate that purified ligstroside has outstanding performance on mitochondrial bioenergetics in models of early AD and brain ageing by mechanisms that may not interfere with Aβ production. Additionally, ligstroside expanded the lifespan in aged mice and enhanced cognitive function.

Abstract
When living in biological and interactive communities, microorganisms use quorum-sensing mechanisms for their communication. According to cell density, bacteria and fungi can produce signaling molecules (e.g., secondary metabolites), which participate, for example, in the regulation of gene expression and coordination of collective behavior in their natural niche. The existence of these secondary metabolites plays a main role in competence, colonization of host tissues and surfaces, morphogenesis, and biofilm development. Therefore, for the design of new antibacterials or antifungals and understanding on how these mechanisms occur, to inhibit the secretion of quorum-sensing (e.g., farnesol and tyrosol) molecules leading the progress of microbial infections seems to be an interesting option. In yeasts, farnesol has a main role in the morphological transition, inhibiting hyphae production in a concentration-dependent manner, while tyrosol has a contrary function, stimulating transition from spherical cells to germ tube form. It is beyond doubt that secretion of both molecules by fungi has not been fully described, but specific meaning for their existence has been found. This brief review summarizes the important function of these two compounds as signaling chemicals participating mainly in Candida morphogenesis and regulatory mechanisms.

Abstract
In a chemosystematic investigation of Digitalideae (Plantaginaceae), the water-soluble part of extracts of two species of Digitalis, two species of Isoplexis, as well as Erinus alpinus and Lafuentea rotundifolia were studied with regard to their content of main carbohydrates, iridoids and caffeoyl phenylethanoid glycosides (CPGs). Digitalis and Isoplexis contained sorbitol, cornoside and a number of other phenylethanoid glycosides including the new tyrosol beta-D-mannopyranoside, sceptroside but were found to lack iridoid glucosides. Erinus contained mainly glucose, the new 8,9-double bond iridoid, erinoside, and a number of known iridoid glucosides including two esters of 6-rhamnopyranosylcatalpol, as well as the CPG poliumoside. Finally, Lafuentea was characterized by the presence of glucose, aucubin and cryptamygin B but apparently lacked CPGs. The chemosystematic significance of the isolated compounds is discussed.
