1. Introduction

The mission of BioSeek is to increase the efficiency of the scientific research process by improving search for specialized information and providing multiple integrated tools to help manage knowledge. A User (“User”, “you”) is any legal or natural person who, as a recipient of the Service, accesses or uses the Service, regardless of the purpose of these actions. Our registered Users (“Members”) reveal their professional identities and credentials, list their scientific publications, engage and collaborate with their peers and networks, exchange professional insights and knowledge, share and view relevant content, and discover business and career opportunities. Content is also visible to unregistered or logged-out Users (“Visitors”) to some extent. This Privacy Policy describes our procedures dedicated to actualize our commitment to protecting your privacy online with transparency, integrity, and security.

This Privacy Policy sets forth the collection and use practices of BioSeek JSC, 42 Ilarion Dragostinov Str., 1505 Sofia, Bulgaria (“BioSeek”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) for Personal Information (defined below) we obtain and apply in the process of providing the services delivered to you through the BioSeek website available at, and through any of its web pages and associated applications which may be available on multiple devices, including mobile applications (“Service”). This Privacy Policy may refer to the Users of BioSeek’s Service as “Members”, “Visitors”, or “you” or through any second-person pronouns, such as “yours”, etc.

BioSeek reserves the right to modify this Privacy Policy at any time, in particular, to reflect changes in market conditions affecting BioSeek’s activities, changes in technology, changes in relevant laws and regulatory requirements, and changes in BioSeek’s system capabilities. In the event we modify this Privacy Policy, any new version shall be effective 30 days immediately after the posting of such revised Privacy Policy on the Service, unless stated otherwise. If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will notify Members by email or other reasonable means, including through notifications on our Service. If you object to the new version, you should stop using our Service and/or close your account. If you continue to use our Service after having been provided with such notice you will be deemed to have acknowledged the Privacy Policy.

2. Information we collect and how we collect it

A. Information you provide us with directly and voluntarily

  • Registration. To create a Member account on our Service, you need to provide certain information during the registration process, such as your name, an email address, and a password. By default, your username will always be visible to Users of the Service, whether they are registered or not, but your password will be kept secret.

  • Other Personal Information. We may require additional personal information that would serve to identify and/or contact a natural person, such as a name, telephone number, and postal address. You may be invited or required to provide information relating to yourself, in order to be granted access to some features, such as, for example, demographic information, such as birthday, gender or occupation, and research vita, authorship of articles, academic or research expertise or interests, conferences you have attended, organizations you are a member of.

  • Sensitive information. We do NOT collect sensitive information such as information about race, health, religious or political views.

  • Related information. We may present to you publication or other information we think might be related to you, and offer you the option to include it into your profile on the Service and associate it with your Personal Information.

B. How we collect Personal Information directly

We collect information from or about you in several cases. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • During registration. When you register for the Service you will be required to provide Personal Information in order to set up a BioSeek account.

  • When you establish your researcher profile. After you register for the Service and create an account, you may want to create a more detailed profile, for which purpose you have to provide us with additional Personal Information. You will be enabled to associate with your account information such as institutional affiliation, biographical information and publications

  • Communication. When you communicate with us via email or in other written form, you may provide us with your name, contact details, and other Personal Information.

  • Customer Support. You may provide us with Personal Information in the process of communicating with our customer support representatives via email or other written messaging or via telephone or other voice communication.

  • Email/Direct mail campaigns. Information about new services, promotions, or special offers may be sent to your email occasionally.

  • Career opportunities and other non-service related topics. You may provide us with your name, email address, and other Personal Information if you contact us about a job or other corporate matters.

  • Third party providers. Services and offers by third parties are present on BioSeek. If you decide to use or benefit from them, you may share personal information with BioSeek and allow us to provide it to these third parties. This is only possible after your explicit approval.

  • BioSeek does not process any payment data.
  • Other cases. BioSeek is a constantly evolving environment since we are working to always improve the service we offer you. Therefore, we will be introducing new functionalities which may result in the collection of new information and in different ways. We shall always inform you first by updating this Privacy Policy before we implement any changes in the aforementioned proceedings.

C. Automatically collected information

We store log files and use tracking technologies such as session cookies, Facebook tracking pixels, and Google analytics to collect information related to you and your use of the Service.

We do NOT present this info to any third parties.

You can edit the settings of your browser to prevent cookies from being stored, to limit the storage of cookies to certain websites, or such that your browser informs you every time a cookie is sent. You can also delete cookies from your computer’s hard drive at any time. However, please note that if cookies are deactivated you will not be able to take advantage of some of BioSeek’s features.

The information we automatically collect about you and your use of the Service includes:

  • IP addresses;
  • User actions - navigation on the Service

D. Information we obtain about you from third parties

We collect publicly available information about you, such as information regarding previous research published by you and regarding affiliations associated with you.

Third party advertising // including tailored advertising and analytics

For now BioSeek does not host any advertising. If we start to present advertising materials on the Service, this section will be updated and you will be notified.

E. Use of Google services

BioSeek reserves the right to use certain Google services, operated by Google, Inc., California, USA (“Google”). Google services may include Google Analytics, a web analytics service, Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting, and integrated services that require Google Analytics to collect data via advertising cookies and anonymous identifiers, and Google’s DoubleClick Services. Any information generated by the cookies about your use of the Service (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States of America. Google will use this information for the purpose of evaluating your use of the Service, compiling reports on website activity for us, and providing other services relating to website activity and Internet usage. F. Communications

In communications you initiate through our Service, for example, an invitation sent to a non-Member to join the community, or an invitation to a member or non-member to join a board you have created- a Mind Map, for example, will contain your name. Once an individual is added to your network on the service, regardless of who has sent the invitation, your contact information that you choose to include in your researcher profile will be shared with that person.

3. How we use information we have collected about you.

Your Personal Information, as defined above, may be used in the following ways:

  • Increase your benefit from the service.Your Personal Information enables us to deliver to you a Service tailored to your needs and interests. For example, based on your Personal Information, the dynamic web pages we generate are customized individually for you.

  • Proceed with research and development. Research and development are of paramount importance for the improvement of our Service and the User experience.

  • Bring to your attention tailored content. We aim at offering you the most relevant for you content. To achieve this, we use the Personal Information provided by you to us and the information about you we infer from the internet. This enables us to deliver to you content that best matches your particular interests and brings greatest value to your practice.

  • Communicate with you. We may use your Personal Information to communicate with you about BioSeek and products or services by text message, email, postal mail, telephone, or other means.   • Ensure the security of your Personal Information. We process your Personal Information in order to ensure it is not accidentally or unlawfully destructed, lost, altered, and that it doesn’t become subject to an unauthorized disclosure.

  • Generate statistics. Your Personal Information serves as a source for generating statistics which give insight on your reading behavior and interests. We generate statistics for internal purposes as well, so that we can continuously improve the Service. 4. Sharing of Personal Information with third parties

In general BioSeek does not share your Personal Information - collected by us or provided by you- with third parties unless you have given your consent beforehand. However, BioSeek reserves the right to disclose if necessary the Personal Information it has about you with vendors, agents, and contractors who assist BioSeek in administering the Service and with the final objective of providing benefits to you.

Personal Information may be shared in response to legal process or when the law requires it (for example, in response to a court order) or to protect the rights, safety or property of BioSeek, the Service, Users of the Service (including you), and others, to the extent the applicable law permits.

BioSeek may also disclose Personal Information in cases when it’s necessary to identify, contact, or initiate legal action against a person or entity who may be violating BioSeek’s Terms of Service, for example causing harm to other Users of the Service.

If assets of BioSeek are transferred or sold to another entity, Personal Information may be shared with the acquiring entity and/or to potential acquiring entities, only to the extent permitted by applicable law and after we have obtained your prior consent where required.

5. Personal Information transferring outside of the European Economic Area

The Personal Information that BioSeek collects from you and that you provide to BioSeek is processed in and is stored on servers in Germany, Hetzner Data Centers. BioSeek has ensured full compliance with GDPR.

In cases when your Personal Information is transferred to third parties (described above in this Privacy Policy) and those third parties are located outside of the European Economic Area, in countries whose data protection laws may not be as exhaustive and detailed, and we consider them to not stand up to guaranteeing our privacy and security standards, we ensure those standards are met by establishing an appropriate data transfer agreement.

6. Security

We are taking all steps reasonably necessary to ensure that your Personal Information is kept securely and in accordance with this Privacy Policy and applicable law, including GDPR prescriptions. We protect your Personal Information against unauthorized access, copying, use, disclosure, and disposal.

All pages are secured using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) technology, which encrypts data between our computer and your end devices. It is best to make sure your Internet browser is using the latest security features by downloading the latest version which should have full SSL support.

Maintaining the confidentiality of your User ID and password which you use to access the Service is your responsibility. You agree to accept responsibility for all activities which take place in relation to this. You should not allow other people to use your credentials. If you suspect your User ID or password may have been compromised, please contact us immediately. In case there is unauthorized access to your login details or unauthorized activity on the Service as a result of your login details becoming known by someone else, we will not be responsible to you unless this was due to an error on our part.

It is important to keep in mind that, despite our efforts regarding security, the Internet is not a secure means of communication. A breach in security of Personal Information communicated through the Internet may occur. You accept that you use the Service at your own risk.

7. Disabling your account and storage of Personal Information

You may request that your account, which you have created on the Service, is closed or disabled at any time and we will act accordingly. We will disable inactive accounts or accounts that are used in violation of our Terms of Service or any applicable law.

However, in order to comply with law, prevent fraud, collect pending fees or resolve disputes, enforce our Terms of Service, assist with legal investigations, and/or take other actions otherwise permitted by law, we will keep Personal Information from closed or inactive accounts as long as it is necessary for the purposes of the actions listed above.

In general, Personal Information from closed or inactive accounts will be deleted one month after the account is closed or deactivated unless we have plausible reasons to believe that the Personal Information should be retained for one of the purposes mentioned above.

8. Rights regarding data

You may be entitled to exercising some or all of the rights listed below (they may vary in accordance with the applicable legislation):

  • require information about whether your Personal Information is retained and access to it, as well as duplicates of your Personal Information retained. Also require information about the purposes of the processing of this information, the categories of Personal Information, and the third parties or categories of third parties to whom the Personal Information is disclosed and wherever possible, the period for which the Personal Information will be stored, or, if not possible, the criteria which determine this period;
  • request adequate rectification of your Personal Information, removal, or restriction of it, e.g. because of its incomplete or inaccurate nature, it is no longer required for the purposes for which it was collected, the consent on which the processing was based has been made obsolete, or you have actualized steps towards objecting to the data processing, which is your right. In cases when your Personal Information is processed by third parties, we will forward your request for rectification, removal, or restriction to such third parties unless this proves impossible or requires disproportionate effort;
  • receive your Personal Information, which you have provided to us, in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format and to transmit those data to another controller without encumbrance from our part; where reasonable from a technical perspective you shall have the right to have the Personal Information transmitted directly from us to another controller;
  • refuse to provide or withdraw your consent to processing of your Personal Information at any time– without expecting or insisting on achieving impact to data processing activities which have taken place before such withdrawal;
  • not to be subject to any automatic decisions concerning you individually (automatic decisions based on data processing by automatic means, for the purpose of measuring and describing personal aspects) which produce legal effects on you or affect you.
